Weird and disappointing move considering where the team is at. Hopefully a very good move in place to counter...

Gives Ryan a chance to play on a contending team, which is a classy thing to do.

Why not both? That’s like 9.5 mil in cap and only 3 mil to pay.

Considering he just won the Masterson, a bit of an odd look.

Not sure how I feel about this.

the only way that makes this look good is if they talked to him for him to be able to go to a contending team to win a cup, with his current contract, there is no chance of that

sounds to me the Sens are trying to get to the cap floor by any means paying Ryan buyout money is probably cheaper for the team at this point.

One more spot for a winger prospect is good news in my book, but I think this is all about cash savings for the Sens.

We'll see if other moves are coming.

I raised this exact issue a couple of weeks ago - it just seemed obvious to me that in a time of limited revenue there would be absolutely zero tolerance for paying out $7.5M in each of the next 2 seasons to Bobby Ryan. Consider the mathemagics that Dorion/Melnyk have done over the past couple of years to bring in LTIR contracts and contracts where AAV>$$$, in order to effectively subvert the Cap Floor. Now take away the majority of Melnyk's revenue for the coming season, and present the following two scenarios to him...

A. Pay Ryan $7.5M in 2020/21 to play #4RW, with $7.2M AAV
B. Pay Ryan $1.8M in 2020/21, with $3.6M AAV, play a $0.7M rookie at #4RW

That's $5M in actual money being saved, with virtually nothing given up in the process other than a bit of AAV... and it creates a roster space for a young prospect. Plus, the AAV drop actually gives Dorion more incentive to take on a bad contract from another team, and getting a valuable sweetener in the process. Or (possibly) even taking on a $5M player who could play a more central role on the team, like someone to help mentor Chabot.

Factor in that it was virtually inevitable that Ryan would be bought out prior to the Seattle expansion draft due to his NMC, and to my mind the writing was on the wall for this move in a big way. I also suggested that you could see Anisimov bought out as well, which would save another $2.5M for the coming year... but they may view Anisimov as more of a valuable asset at this point given that he's a veteran C, with a chance to maybe even trade him at the deadline.

When I first saw this I thought it was gutless and shameful, especially when the team appears like it will struggle to hit floor this year, though reading the comments, if PD did in fact speak with Bobby about his goals and Bobby agreed he'd like a chance to win, that is maybe different. Now if they start forking high value pick overpays for those high cap low value contracts like Reimer and Erickson, the writing is clearly on the wall for this owner - take Kraken money and then get out. Altogether, a sad end to a sad story that finally had a bit of redemption this year.

He has to spend one more year in Sweden I thought? Which is likely for the best.

I was thinking Abromov or Balcers more like.

I agree with most of this except for getting a valuable asset for taking on a bad contract. Sens will be now further from the cap floor, so they are a little more desperate to get a bad contract. For example, I don't really see them getting an Eriksson to get to the floor and then score a quality pick or prospect too.

However, still early in the "off-season" so lots of work can be done to create quality moves for a team that should still be in rebuild mode.

While I really like BR as a person and his return had made me hopeful that he would bounce back next season, we need to see the whole picture here before knowing how much sense this move makes at this point in time.

What is super weird though, is how the team would not have mentioned this in PDs first media appearance in months, just a few days ago (like they did with Anderson)

there is literally nothing the pens have that could entice Ottawa to take on JJ

hate to see BR go, but this is absolutely the right move to make.

with a NMC, he would have had to be protected, meaning we would have lost someone like Tierney or Wolanin for nothing..........while not devastating to the team, it's much smarter to keep them and buy out BR (for what amounts to big $$ and cap savings in the long run).

I have been telling them that forever. Only enticing thing is an unprotected 2022 1st.

The Senators have the assets and could be first in line to make a deal and acquire a substantial rebuilding piece. They have a long way to go to get to the cap floor.

Not sure that the Sens step up to take cap dumps from other teams.

I would like to see them kick the tires on the two Finns. We have been told that Laine and Puljarrvi are both being floated as possible trade prospects.

Would you do the #5 for Laine?

Would you offer up a 2nd for Puljarrvi?

My guess would be absolutely for Laine and absolutely not for Pjj
