Looks like you got yourself a young Nicklas Hjlamarsson. The kind of Dman that raises his value as the season goes on. |

Thanks for putting this together so quickly. Unlike Alexis, you couldn't have had the full book on Braden ready to go.
Supposedly the Rangers were still very active on the phones AFTER the Schneider pick so we'll see if they make some moves tomorrow. 11:30 start time should mean that some deals happen early. |

If you read between the tea leaves here this pick says volumes:
1. Any trade for a center would include a D prospect or a 1st rounder depending on how high up the list you want to go. Stocking your system now with a projected future deficit is smart.
2. If, and its a big if, the Rangers are going to make a serious run at someone like Eichel the return will be heavy and ensuring you can cover that cost by having NHL ready players to bring onto your team 2 years from now is a smart move. Quality over quantity. The Rangers had 8 first round picks in the last 4 years and could conceivably go 2 in a row without one if they trade for someone in the level of Eichel. Clearly the Rangers know the asking price for centers around the league and this pick may signal teams are looking at the Rangers defense as a place they want to go for trades. Lindqvist, Miller, Fox would all be reasonable asks for someone like Eichel (but not for a 2/3c) so stocking up on a position that may be weakened in a future trade is very smart. Plus the fallback is you have another very solid RHD. Keep stocking the system Jeff. We are going to be so good. |

I think it’s a very solid pick. Great value at 19. And I’m a big believer of if a guy is available that’s your best player left on the board, go up and get him. This was only a 3rd rounder this time. Not a second like they did for K’Andre. And whether or not it prevented the Devils from taking him is a bonus.
Surprised Montreal took Guhle over Schneider at 16.
Every mock draft I saw had Schneider going as the 3rd defenseman taken, usually Toronto.
Edmonton, Toronto and Montreal’s picks were all fairly surprising |

If it's accurate that Trouba's NMC becomes a limited NTC in 3.yeara, the timing for Schneider could be spot on. |

But according to capfriendly, that doesn't happen for another 4 years. Let's see what length of contract DeAngelo gets Iif he's not dealt sooner |

Yeah. Summer of 2024 Trouba turns into a 15 team NTC |

Not to nit-pick, the opening lines should read more like:
The Rangers, after selecting Alexis Lafreniere first overall, sat at 22 in the first round following New Jersey's 20th pick. The Blueshirts... |

I trust Gorton and JD, I believe there’s a bigger deal coming that makes this look even better, we are absolutely loaded on the right side for years to come, let’s close up that hole at Center now |

I saw it mentioned on twitter that after Guhle was picked at 16 that the Rangers tried to trade up to 17 with the Black Hawks so they could get up there and take Schneider but couldn’t get the trade worked out.
Blackhawks probably were asking for both Rangers 3rd rounders I would imagine.
Explains JD’s glee in the little video that they were still going to get their guy.

How many 1st rounders since 2018? Like 8 guys. The envy of the league, with Lafreniere and Kakko... Look out! |

Very well could be. I think we all have speculated that Nils would be part of any package for a good 2C. This could be a preemptive strike so to speak if they are thinking about pulling that trigger.
If anything else though he's probably a few years away. This could be setting them up for a time when they might have to cut bait with Trouba and/or ADA a few years from now.

Thanks. Changed the 19 to 22 in first sentence. Piece on NJ was captured in last sentence of paragraph |

My mistake. Have fixed the reference and updated the paragraph. Thanks for the catch. |

Schneider was born two days late to be part of last year’s draft so you could probably figure one more year of junior for him, one year of AHL and then he’s a Ranger sometime during 2022-23 season.
Lundkvist is probably going straight to Rangers for the 2021-22 season. (Maybe he does 40 games in Hartford first)
Robertson probably joins the Rangers same time as Schneider.
k’Andre joins at some point this coming season. |

They went heavy on skill for all these first rders recently, now they NEEDED to add some jam/toughness etc to protect all that skill. It sounds to me, and I don’t wanna necessarily compare because it’s not fair to Schneider, but I get modern day Scott Stevens from him. Maybe more speed. And THAT is a player you NEED to win cups. No one is going to wanna cross the middle/or slot with this guy looming around to knock you into next week.
They NEEDED to get tougher and harder to play against, and they did that. Laf is a tough sob too, but I get that’s just an additional quality to him as a player. I love the Schneider pick and they stole home from the devils which makes it sweeter |

No problem. Thanks for the hard work. |

The two comps I saw were Colton Parayko and...Dan Girardi. If he turns out to be either, I would be very happy. |

Defense first player and we need that too.
I get that we all want centers, but to me this pick is a pick that fell into their laps and they were thrilled to be able to trade and get him. I think jimmy said he was 12th on their board? which is a homerun in their eyes I’m sure. RHD is a position you can afford to have an excess in imo. The league is always clamoring for players good there. |

Dan Girardi without Torts breaking him by blocking about 100 shots a game would be really good.

I'm already dreaming of a PK where we can throw Lindgren and him out there. That just screams shutdown pair in that area.

I just am of the opinion that drafting for need may work, but drafting by skill usually works (maybe not for the rangers ). I'm not going to get bent out of shape for not taking a C who may or may not make it to the league vs. a RHD who, by all accounts, should make it to the NHL.
And like everyone has stated, they can use the deep RHD prospect pool to address the C position. I almost guarantee it will happen.
I really wish they traded the pick in a bigger package, though. |
