I'm astonished he went for that combination of term and $.
It's a serious miss from Treliving to not bring him back at that price. Horrible. |

Dude, I'm not - the flat cap is going to play havoc with mid tier guys this year. This actually an overspend IMO, and the Leafs are already cap (frank)ed. What i find truly hilarious is that they replaced Gardiner with a more expensive Gardiner |

For one you have no idea what the Flames offered maybe he wanted to go home...also a NMC with the expansion draft coming up likely doesn't work with the Flames plans
Calgary still has money to spend |

Warts and all 5M AAV isn’t terrible for a guy that has played the top pair for the last 5 years. Not saying he should probably be played as top pair but you can put him there in a pinch.
What’s surprises me most about Brodie signing with the leafs is that he’s a huge wings fan, not that there an attractive location right now but to go to their rival.
As well it seemed the Calgary fans managed to get between his ears a bit based on his comments after his health scare, so to go to a market that’s extremely harsh on players in the worst of times I can’t help but think he’s going to get eaten alive like Gardiner 2.0.
As far as markstrom goes I’m happy to have him, I don’t love the 6th year or the no move clause but it’s good to have a stable starter since kipper left. And to be fair Vancouver hasn’t really iced a great team in front of him until this year so as long as we can do that it should work out. |

Markstrom is a great pick up for Calgary. |

Sorry I have to disagree with you because...... he wanted a NMC & did not want to be exposed on the expansion draft, Tre wasnt prepared to give him that. In Toronto, he was assured he would be protected. Its not a serious miss, its that fcking expansion draft. |

How's the mood in here.
Brodie out and overpaid a bit for Markstrom (at least re term).
Do you guys still have room for Hall or no? |

I hope not. We do not need LW. Unless Johnny is going somewhere I cannot see Hall happening,
Happy as poop about Markstrom. |

Happy to see more support for markstrom here. I like rittich but we needed a starting goalie that can play good for the whole year. As well it’s nice to see stability for the first time since kipper. Playoffs not included we have no issues offensively or defensively which made an upgrade in net a priority for me going into the off-season, lehner was my first choice but markstrom is a solid plan B.
With just over 10 million left, Andrew mangiapane to resign and a Brodie sized hole to fill we shouldn’t be looking at Hall.
I don’t know what mangiapane will get but my first thought is chris Tanev may be had for cheap, any other ideas? |

Personally, I don't like the cost or term for Markstrom. I would have preferred to sign Khudobin for $4M, bring back Talbot for $3.7 and have the best tandem in the West. Would have packaged BSD up with Derek Ryan for picks. I'm betting that Rittich's game thoroughly goes to poop now that the Flames have unequivacably made it clear that he'll never be number one - not that he deserved to be after a few springs where he lost his game and played himself out of ever starting a playoff game. I feel bad for him - he's a really good guy.
In a dream world, the Flames would have signed both Krug and Pietrangelo. Realistically, they won't be in contention for either of them (especially now that Krug signed with the Blues) and Pietrangelo will (I'm guessing) sign with the Rangers.
Hamonic brought grit, but the advanced stats showed that he wasn't worth what Tre paid to bring him here. He'll likely land in Winnipeg, anyway.
Brodie was our best D thru the playoffs. Anderson was a close second and both were lights out better than Gio. Did you see how crappy Gio played against Dallas. For being team captain, he doesn't demonstrate leadership when it comes to the playoffs.
Just no to Barrie. He's a one-dimensional player who rarely (if ever) plays a full season and the only thing he does consistently is play poor defensively.
I'd take a flier on Pysyk. Plays sound defence and in a pinch, has played wing.
And no to Hall, too. He had one decent season with Edmonton and one really good season with NJ, but he's a train wreck when it comes to back checking and creating turnovers that turn into scoring opportunities for the opposition.
Someone mentioned Craig Smith. I like that - good solid guy. Puts up consistent secondary scoring while playing a 200-foot game. |

This isn't NHL20 -
Khudobin and Talbot gives you what the Flames have had for years, which is sheer mediocrity in net. You have to hope, in a tandem, that you are playing the right guy on the right night or you're (frank)ed.
Playing out your scenario -
Ryan and Rittch going saves you ~$6M
Khudobin and Talbot eat up $7.7 (we're only saving $1M here over Rittich & Markstrom btw - plus you now have 2 34/35 year old goalies signed to ages 37/38?
Krug @ $6.5 and Piet at, what, $8 (at least) absorbs another $14-16M
So $22-$24M in and $6M out? The Flames had $17M in cap space entering the day, so, in addition to saying goodbye to Ryan, would have had nothing left for Mangiapane or Kylington and would an insanely top heavy team lacking a qualified 3/4C, 2 bottom six wingers, a depth defenceman and their 2nd line RW and would have had to shed another contract.
Krug and Piet is not a dream, it's basically a giant puffy pink elephant riding a unicorn while on your morphine trip... |

I think we are all pretty happy to get Markstrom but yes the term might end up smelling like the Luongo contract does in Vancouver. I dont think we were ever in on Hall as we have 6 LW as it is (Tkachuk, Gaudreau, Mangiapane, Bennett, Dube, Lucic). Its more likely we trade one of those LW for a RW or RD and use our extra cap space to sign what we dont get in trade. Maybe trade JG for Dumba and then sign Toffoli & Stetcher. |

What kind of difference do you think Markstrom is going to make? Talbot and Khudobin both had better stats than Markstrom last year. Seems like it makes way more sense to have a solid team in front of the goalie. They're still a mediocre defensive team.
Markstrom has also faced a ton of shots over the past few years and had multiple injuries last year. The Flames will be lucky to get 60 games out of him.

And we give 4 years and 4.5 million per year to Chris Tanev who can barely lace his own skates anymore. Let's hope he doesn't have a NMC and gets picked by Seattle.
Yikes, I hope Markstrom is ready for some rubber, because that D is gonna suuuuuck. |
