I think Barry is high on Mayfield’s game. He typically had the top TOI after Pelech and Pulock and sometimes more than either in the PO’s. I thought he has improved his game as have most in Barry's d first system.
Dobson puts some muscle on his frame this off season he will be awesome imho.

Agreed...Trotz really likes Mayfield. He's got an edge. Heck, I like Mayfield, too. I don't mean to trash the guy or anything...any complaints I have are on the margins. I'd rather the Isles were able to keep all their top 4!

Lou said arbitration was what triggered it, the unknown cost
- Upstate_isles

I get that but they must have had a discussion before that. I wonder what the number they want is? Before Arbitration 9 times out of 10 you can get a feel of who they are going to compare ( in this case Toews ) your player with. Maybe they thought that cost was not what they had in mind.

Gotcha and agree, keeping the team together is your first priority if possible.
I can live with Toews being traded and think Dobson is going to be a hell of a player. Also think they will try to dump Boychuk ( might cost one of those 2nd rounders Toews got us) and sign Green for depth. I think as I have said numerous times Ladd is destined for Robidas Island.

I liked Devon a lot but if they were not moving Leddy then He really had to go... I will miss his speed for sure... My random thoughts.

1. It certainly sounds like they needed some picks to move to get rid of Boychuk's contract.
2. I was shocked he was only worth 2 seconds and we couldn't get a 3rd but then I saw what Schmidt was worth.. only a 3rd?
3. Next year is expansion draft. I am sure this was partly based on that as well. If you go with the 3 D-men and 7 forwards (or is it 6?) instead of 8 skaters total we can protect more guys. I am guessing as much as we all like Toews he was not better thought of than Pelech, Pulock, and Mayfield (partly b/c of Mayfield's awesome contract). So now u protect those 3 guys.. and u can keep Barzal, Brock, Lee, Beau, JGP, Bailey, and Ebs or someone they trade for this month.
4. It's also one less RFA they need to sign.. so there's is that too.

"Lamoriello didn’t come out and say other deals were done, but word had filtered out earlier Monday that the Islanders had signed goalie Cory Schneider to a one-year deal worth $700,000 — a far cry from the seven-year deal worth $6 million per that Schneider signed with the Devils back in 2015, which was bought out last week. Lamoriello traded the ninth overall pick on the draft floor in 2013 for Schneider (Isles GM Garth Snow offered Nino Niederreiter to the Canucks for Schneider but lost out), and the GM and goalie have remained close.
07:36:22 For a small deal that can be buried in the AHL, it’s worth the risk to see if the 34-year-old Schneider can get back on track after injuries derailed him the past several years. He’ll come to Islanders camp as the No. 3 goalie behind Semyon Varlamov and Ilya Sorokin."

worth the shot for sure. This is also from Staple.

LL adds that there's a "strong chance" Andy Greene returns to #Isles now that Toews has been moved.

Lamoriello said he had a "difficult conversation" with Devon Toews informing him of the trade. LL said Toews filing for arbitration and the unknown of how high an award could go spurred the move. "We did give up a good player," one the #Isles were not looking to move.

I’ve seen multiple posters throw this up on this thread now. My question is who steps in when we have an injury after we trade Boychuck and I assume resign Greene? Aho who 80% of this thread was saying is not an nhl player?

If they sign Greene and get rid of Boychuk, they'll still have Hickey and Aho, right? Hickey's always been a guy I've said is a perfect 7 d-man. I mean, severely overpriced for a 7, but that's kind of the theme with Isles' depth players

Urgh forgot about Hickey. Yeah Hickey was the perfect 7th defenseman three years ago not sure he still fits that description?

Not happy about having to give up Toews is what it is with our cap issues I get it but I’ll cringe just a little more when I see Komarov out there.

Have to hope Bridge has some decent dmen if Hickey is not a good option anymore. Do you not trust Thompson getting these players ready?

He made way more than two jackass, he's gone and 2 2nd round picks are way more than a bag of pucks, Columbus got a 5th for Murray and they arent that far apart in talent
- Upstate_isles

You’re a moron. You probably haven’t been to an Isles game since the 80’s

Great. So we lose Toews but keep an 89 year old defenseman who will probably play over Dobson again

The 89 year old played better in the playoffs.

Dobson takes Toews spot. Andy Greene is not the same type of defenseman as Toews. What part of either of those sentences do you not understand?

I know you’re just gonna try to insult my intelligence now. I’m married 14 years now, you’re gonna have to go really low to really insult me, just to warn you.

Like I said yesterday...Barzal, Pulock or Toews...which one would you prefer we don’t keep?

There are some bad contracts on this team, that’s a fact. The fact is, they’ve already been signed, they’re already done. You can’t change that. No one wants Boychuk or Leo or Ladd and no one will give us much of anything for Leddy, who I think still has a good year or two in him.

Toews is unfortunately the odd man out. It doesn’t take a genius to figure that out. You can female dog about it all you want, tell everyone (funny even people who argue constantly are in agreement about this trade) they are stupid or call them a moron and scream about how we didn’t get anything back in return (like 2 2nd round picks are nothing :/) when Schmidt just got traded for 1 3rd round pick.

It was tidy business by Lou and if you bothered to read any of his statements post-trade, it was a trade he himself admitted he would have rather NOT have had to make.
