Good article. I agree that it's now very likely EJ will be asked and agree to waive his NMC after the Toews trade. Why isn't Graves on the unprotected list? Seattle's pick will likely be one of Donskoi, Compher, Graves or Jost. They're going to get a good player. |

Makar unfortunately is not exempt. Playing in the 2019 playoffs makes him a 3rd year player this season. It will also make him an RFA next summer but for some reason Eklund didn't include him on that list either.

so they have Sam Girard, Cale Makar, Devon Toews and Ryan Graves to protect, and I am still unclear if they have to protect Erik Johnson
but if they dont have to protect Johnson, I think they go the protect 8 players scenario so they can protect those 4 defensemen |

They're required to protect Johnson unless he waives his NMC in which case they would not protect him and it would be highly unlikely Seattle would take him due to age/salary combination.
I expect he'll waive his NMC and they'll protect:
Makar
Girard
Toews
and leave Graves unprotected. |

yeah I cant imagine they would trade two 2nd rounders for Toews not to protect him |

Graves is certainly a player of note as well. At the end of the day I knew my plan was to take Compher so I focused on the available forwards. |

It's a very credible choice and I wouldn't at all be surprised if he's Seattle's pick. |

good question, Landeskog too
I really dont believe teams are going to protect pending UFA's or why Seattle would take them, except for the slim chance they can get them to sign an 8 year deal |

Unless he has a huge season and they extend him, they won't protect him, IMO. In all reality, if there IS a desire to keep him long term, Sakic should ask him to wait until after Seattle drafts to put pen on paper and sign then.

I think it would be prudent to extend their captain sooner rather than later, but who knows how tight that group is or close Sakic is with his squad. (?)

I betcha they'd have a side understanding with him to sign after the expansion draft so they wont have to use a spot to protect him
I dont see him leaving Colorado ever |

Hey Sean,
I sent you a message a couple of weeks ago - if you're still looking for someone to do a Caps protection list, let me know! |

I don't see him leaving, either, but imagine Seattle selecting Landeskog and putting a team together that looks great on paper. Maybe they work hard and sell him on the city and the beauty of the Pacific Northwest, then offer him 8-10 million/season for 5 or more years and ask him to be captain of the Kraken. Could be tempting. (?) And maybe that's too rich for Colorado's blood. It's also no stretch to imagine the good handful of other teams who would also like the chance to talk to Landeskog . . . In my opinion, Colorado just doesn't take that chance.
Saad I would expose; Landeskog I would lock up now (or ASAP) and put it to bed. But there's a reason I'm a social worker and not a hockey executive! Lol |

Yeah can't see them not taking Jost - age, potential, draft pedigree - it's all there, and he can't get top 6 minutes in Colorado but could in Seattle. Guess it depends on next year's production. |
