Anthony Travalgia: Patrik Laine backs up talk with opening night performance Patrik Laine's three-point night was the perfect start to the season for the forward.

The Jets should sign Laine at $10 mil plus for 8 years as they will regret it if they don't. Use the $4 mil they pay Perreault to top up Laine's salary.

Did he call Ehlers a B-t-h in an interview last night?

Easy there islansjet, it was one game.
More importantly the only complaint i've read Laine has is for his usage, well look what happened last game Laine 16 mins Wheeler 21 mins. I doubt he will sign a contract extension as long as that continues.

Haha. What recent comp got paid that money?!?!?! The kid was making me eat some crow for sure, but unless he plans on maintaining his 67% shooting percentage, these numbers will drop. His line was out-shot, but he absolutely capitalized when it counted most. I'd be weary of anything long term over 7M AAV. He looked good last night, but consistency needs to be there.

Jets are fine in terms of Cap. Statsny, Lowry and Perreault will very likely walk into free agency, freeing up 13.55M, beyond their current 4.4M cap space. I don't see too many raises being handed out on their current expiring contracts. Laine may get a slight bump, but if he wants to up his trade value, that is just fine with me.

If Laine is signed long term, it won’t be a single digit cap hit

More likely the Jets re-sign all 3. Perreault signs for 1 million to take Lewis spot next year. Stastny at 4 to stay on as a center, cause there is no way they will just hand over a starting spot to a prospect, and Lowry at 3 just because he's Lowry and they just can't quit the guy.

Maybe CBJ will want Roslovic for center depth when the trade PLD to NYR
What would Jack fetch...a 3rd?

I don’t think any of them re-sign. Perreault is likely calling it a day after this season or taking a 1 year jaunt to a contender, Stastny and the Jets both know what the deal is and why he’s here, and Lowry strikes me as the type of player that might want a chance at a different role elsewhere.
Lowry is the most likely to stay, however.

I don't expect Perreault back in any way, shape or form.
Much will depend on how the Jets finish regarding both Stastny and Lowry.

Haha lets not get carried away. Laine had a great game, but Barzal's 7M, Halls 8M, Pietrangelo's 8.8M...... I'd happily take Barz over Laine, Hall is a former MVP and still a ppg player, and Pietrangelo was crucial in winning a cup.

Laine will not get big money. Maybe a 1-1.5M pay raise from his current hit, but not much more beyond that.

If he is 10M+, he is not part of a contender. That is for sure. Who would commit that money to Laine next season?

Don't see Perreault returning next season.

So Jets practice cancelled because of Covid exposure. Anyone have any scoop on what the problem might be? Or who?

Barzal-bridge deal not long term, Isles have major cap headaches
Hall-one year deal and almost 30 years old
Pietrangelo- Vegas cap advantage due to state tax rate and is 30 years old

Probably cancelled cause of Laine, he's the cause of everything wrong with the Jets, he must've got Covid somehow and spread it throughout the room.

I understand he wipes down his gaming station daily and sanitizes his toothbrush as well.

“Just my gaming station, that’s pretty much it for me. And a toothbrush, but that’s it,” the 22-year-old replied, when asked what he ‘must have’ with him inside his hotel room in Edmonton.

I wouldn’t trade Roslovic for a third, no point to that. Let him sit or sign a one year deal and up his value.
For Columbus, I’d ask for one of Foudy, Texier or Bemstrom.

I can not see anyway Perrault’s back, to many already better and younger (Harkins, Vesalainen )
Stastny may be brought back on a one year deal depending on how Perfetti looks and where he gets to play this year.
Lowry is a wild card, team loves him but Gustafson is ready now for a bottom 6 Center spot. Harkins as well has been a Center his whole life. Who knows maybe even Henry Nikkanen challenges for a bottom 6 Center spot?

I must have been the only one who watched the Jets game on Thursday and saw 34 year old Thompson and Lewis take a regular shift for them.
The Jets will always look for a couple of veterans to play their 4th line and that will be Perrault's spot next year unless he retires and joins True North.

You are forgetting that we are living in a Covid-19 world with a flat cap. As well with league revenues most likely to decline, no way does Laine get a long term deal. He will be lucky if he gets the same amount as Kyle Connor as I think the cap will most likely go down.

You also have to remember with the mounting job losses in both the USA and Canada, there is going to be less people that will have the ability to go to the games, or having the ability to buy merchandise.

Interesting discussion this morning on “The Illegal Curve”.

This Pierre Luc Dubois situation is something that I think the Jets should take a serious look at.

The North Division is incredibly weak, especially with Winnipeg, Toronto, Edmonton, Vancouver and Ottawa finishing in the bottom 25 last year in high danger chances against allowed. We are going to see some old school barn burner hockey this year.

With the division being so weak, the Jets should legitimately win this division especially with having a Vezina goalie and a high octane top 6.

LA when they were on the verge of winning a cup traded away Wayne Simmonds, a highly touted prospect in Brayden Schenn and a second round pick to get Richards. This would be the Jets equivalent of trading away Roslovic, Perfetti and 2021 second round pick.

I know that Perfetti is going to be good, however I do think this trade could make the Jets legitimate Stanley Ciupc contenders now.

What do you all think?

Forward lines would be:

Ehlers-Scheifele-Wheeler
Connor-Dubois-Laine
Vesalainen-Stastny-Harkins
Copp-Lowry-Appleton

You and others have to realize that signing a young star to a long term deal through his prime years will cost and is in no way comparable to those three players deals mentioned earlier.
