They needed to let Torts go before last season, imo, after they swept Tampa Bay only to lose to them swiftly the next year... They had already reached their ceiling at that point under Torts. And right now the only thing for certain is that his system completely handcuffs his skilled players - Seriously. Roslovic, Jenner, Laine, Domi
As far as Foligno goes, his cap-hit is tradeable, unlike what you've suggested in your blog. It was only a 5.5 hit this year, his last year, and with the amount left due to him and the ability to retain some of his salary, he could fetch a nice return from a team looking to add some grit and a little scoring to go along with it - At most a 2nd rounder, but I don't see many teams that desperate right now...
If Foligno brings back a 3rd round pick, you absolutely trade him. If he only brings back a late rounder or a warm body, keep him and let him finish his contract with the 'C' on his jersey. He wasnts to come back on a lower salary? Why not - I don't see many prospects in the CBJ system that he would be taking ice time away from.
Foligno for another 3 years at 3 million is pretty reasonable, imo.
As far as the rest of the team? Savard would be a guy to extend, imo. What he brings to the team isn't easy to find, and the return he would get in a trade will be underwhelming.
Elvis, however, is nothing to write home about. I don't see the infatuation with this guy. Honestly, in the Sabres blog, they drool all over the CBJ goalies and I have no idea why - We have a goalie with way better numbers in Ullmark but I digress...
I think Texier is the guy you should sell high on, though. He started the season off hot and quickly fell into oblivion in Tort's system. He seems like a guy that needs a change of scenery in order to really break out. The good news is, his year-over-year numbers are almost identical, so he really hasn't regressed... But he looks like that guy who might need a little extra work with the assistant coaches. He's a French hockey player - While it has made huge strides in the past couple of decades, you're going to have a huge learning curve bringing French players over and Texier has the skill... He just needs to be refined.
I don't think Columbus is the best fit for him going forward. Is the team rebuilding if they miss the playoffs? Are they going to torture us with another season of Torterella and pretending to be a playoff team? Or can they re-tool the roster, make a few hockey trades, get a new and offensive minded coach and be an exciting team for the first time in their history.
The city of Columbus deserves it. The NHL really turned this town into a loyal, if not hardcore, hockey market. They really don't get enough praise for going into a completely unknown market for major sports and building an incredibly loyal and supportive fanbase. The success of the team, or lack thereof, is probably why they don't get praise but again, a completely untapped and unknown market in Columbus is now one of your best fanbases in the league - Nothing to sneeze at.
All of this with a team that has missed the playoffs 75% of it's existence, and with one of the weakest logos and branding in professional sports (imo)... They actually did build something out of nothing down here.
Now fix the team's color scheme from that Red/Navy Blue parody of a New York Rangers uniform and make them the colors of the Union Soldier's uniforms - A navy blue jacket (Go figure, where the team got their name) with light-blue pants and yellow accents.
Navy blue/Light Blue/Yellow and FFS make the canon logo the primary and bring back the union soldier hat but at the very least, get rid of the 'star' logo. There's a team called the DALLAS STARS that uses a STAR as their logo and team's indentity, who thought it was a good idea to have a STAR be front and center as the main logo for this team? I don't care what the state flag looks like - Actually I do, it's lovely, but turning it into that monstrosity of a logo is a travesty - Just slap the flag itself on the shoulder. But for the love of god, get this team some appropriate branding right now.
First - can't make any rash decisions at this time about Tarasov - Elvis. More time, at least the rest of this season, in the AHL is needed to see if Tarasov can step up to the NHL sooner than later.
With the 4 UFAs - Foligno, Savard, Nash, DelZ - Jarmo MUST trade them and get at least 6 picks/prospects in return (aggregate). If he removes the "sentimentality" affect from Foligno & Savard, he should get at least a 2nd, 3rd, and a prospect from the two of them. Nash & DelZ should return picks in the 3rd-5th rnd area.
Laine won't be traded now - or even this summer. Jarmo will get a 1C to compliment him during the summer. Between Domi and Roslovic we should have a workable 2C or 3C.
Tex won't be traded yet either - unless he's a piece for a dynamic 1C. Another piece in a trade like this would be one of our goalies - Korpi or Elvis, with Tarasov stepping up to be a backup.

Here's how I would see it play out, if we loose Kivlenieks to Seattle then we should wait a little longer and assess which goaltender is are starter, after this season it's still a toss up. If not than I would feel more confortable going into next season knowing , we have either Merz or Korpi potentially backed up by Kivlenieks/ Tarasov .

After watching last nights highlights, I am surprised that Torts didn’t bench Laine. Not just a minus 3, but a big factor in the 3 goals against. - bennythehat
Because PLD is doing so much better up there in the 'Peg
Roslovic is looking to be the pest part of the deal, so Columbus still wins the trade.
