The way I feel about defenders in this draft and where I rank them and would draft them are completely different.
I had Quinn Hughes as the 4th best player in my rankings, I wanted to draft him around 11th in that draft. - manvanfan
Yeah, I remember you acknowledged his talent but wanted an all around dman that could PK too |

You can't just ignore the offensive side to his game. 94 points in 129 games the past 2 seasons. There is a lack of defensive side to his game, that for me is someone I wouldn't take in the top 10 in most drafts. Which is why I wanted him at 11
In a perfect draft for me.
Owen Power would be taken somewhere between 3-5th, Simon Edvinsson, Brandt Clarke 11-15, Carson Lambos 12-14, Carson Ceulemans 13-18. That's getting a bit of value for the pick though.
In this draft though there isn't currently a forward that shows enough elite skill to take that top spot away from Power. Edvinsson at 9 could be potentially dropped to 11th with a combination of McTavish, Othmann, Lysell jumping him in other peoples rankings. OR someone see's the offensive that Clarke brings over the more complete player in Edvinsson. |

So if Canucks defy the odds or get a Bettman break (worse schedule in NHL history and cap recapture in Flat cap era) they should pick Powers 1OL?

QH could play RD and rover with him as long term partner. But next season if it happens twin tower Myers to break in. |

Canucks are cursed when it comes to lottery balls during recent history. Might as well fantasize about something somewhat realistic

We've been fantasizing for a Cup for decades isn't that as odd as this June 2nd probability of a lotto seeding? |

I'm not going to have Quinn and Power, play first pairing on this team unless they do have a real tank plan.
Or the fact that left and left just don't work. |

Schmidt played well on his off side in Vegas but Green does seem to be stubborn in really wanting 3 LHD and 3 RHD |

Schmidt has a plus 50 5v5 in Vegas. Quite a bit higher than the next guy. He is a 2nd pairing defender. If Green really wants that lefty-righty than OJ should go
Hughes _________
Schmidt Myers
Rathbone Hamonic |

His last year there he struggled a bit defensively but prior to that he was solid
Hopefully for the Canucks' sake, he's not declining lol |

Coaching change. - manvanfan
Baumer/Green teach these guys to give up the blueline and collapse to the slot/net, Schmidt in Vegas was coached to pressure the puck all over the ice. I think only Hughes is allowed to play outside of the system.
He’s a bad fit here under these coaches. Guys like Edler and Myers who prefer to collapse to the net are better fits. Hamonic is an okay fit. I think there are times where he would like to body check a puck carrier who’s flying down the wing but he plays the system and willingly backs off.
If Sutter can get the Flames to buy into his system, you’ll really see a difference between his defensive system and Green/Baumer’s next season |

He only played 3 seasons in Vegas, so I may have been wrong when I said he has had one good season, he may have had 2 good seasons.
Not good for a defenseman that gets paid 5.95 million per season and struggles.
Oh well, only 4 more seasons of him. |

Caps fans said he was impressive during his final season so I’d say 3 good followers by 2 mediocre seasons is probably fair. Either way, if he has another up and down year next season, he’ll be viewed league-wide as a declining dman with a long term contract |

Its funny how a player can be signed in free-agency to a long term contract and it is a bad deal, usually to much AAV and term, but you trade a 3rd round pick for a cap dump and people are okay with it.
I am not kidding when I post that thos fanbase gets what they deserve. |

I get what you're saying, but I think it's unfair to paint everyone with the same brush. Speaking for myself, I obviously rate the trades itself, but then you have to look at the player's ability/age vs their contract as well.
Like you know I dislike the Myers signing, I would be even more disappointed had Benning traded a pick or prospect to take on his contract. I understand that's exactly how you feel about Schmidt though so point taken. |

Didn't say right away but if you never play them together then it's back to the QH long term partner drawing board. Not sure if Woo can grow into that role. So who in this draft could Canucks realistically pick as RSD for QH? |

I don't think he's a good fit for Green's conservative system, I like the player though. I also recognize the fact that his last season in Vegas wasn't his best defensively.
His game was very well suited to the Knights system which is basically all about puck pressure all over the ice. |

Also playing as a unit instead of 5 individuals.
Soon the kids will learn to trust each other. Glimpse's of it offensively over the years have led to some beautiful goals. Defensively, a work in progress.
Half the defence will be gone again in another year or two though. |

So true.
I also don’t think this management/coaching staff are the best at putting together defensive pairings. Hughes-Tanev was one of the very few that worked. It’s easier said than done but you need two dmen who can read off of each other.
Those President’s Trophies days was probably the last time we’ve seen 2 pairings like that in the top 4, but then those guys started to decline and it’s been a mess ever since.
