95. Victor Stjernborg — C/LW, Växjö Lakers, 5-foot-11
Stjernborg’s one of those players who is never going to be more than a role player at the pro level, but he has all of the makings needed to become good at what he does well. He’s a 200-foot player who’s heavy, forechecks, wins his battles, backchecks his tail off, never stops moving, and fights for his ice to drive to the crease and make something happen on offence. He still has enough skill through his hands and his release to will plays into existence even if there are times when you’d prefer he play with a little more patience.
-------------
Getting into the later rounds for somone like this player. I don't want to say it because it's a later round pick but is it a safe place to take someone that falls into the "sea of granlunds"
(frank) sakes. I like this guy but watching his shift to shift. He's a coaches dream, does all the little things but doesn't have any of the tools that separates his game into something more.
Wins board battles with smart play, takes a hit to make a play, skates well, defensively solid, plays the game the right way with no added attributes.
Now Pronman saying the same as my blurb.
Victor Stjernborg, C, Vaxjo-SHL
May 22, 2003 | 5-foot-11 | 202 pounds
Skating: Below-average
Puck Skills: Below-average
Hockey Sense: Average
Compete: Above-average
Stjernborg is not a player that will pop out to you in a typical way, but he’s a player coaches love, which is how at 17 years old, he found his way into a regular shift on the SHL champions. He’s undersized and he’s not that fast or skilled with the puck, but he makes the most of what he has due to his hockey sense and competitiveness. He has enough offensive instincts to make tough offensive plays and create in hard areas. He generates a lot of offense through his work ethic, forcing turnovers and creating around the net-front area. That may not be enough, but at several levels he has found ways to produce and get coaches to lean on him. In a sentence, Stjernborg’s work ethic and play versus men give him a chance, but his toolkit may be too bland to play in the NHL. |

36. Francesco Pinelli, C, Kitchener-OHL
April 11, 2003 | six-feet | 185 pounds
Skating: Below-average
Puck Skills: Average
Hockey Sense: Average
Compete: Average
Without an OHL season, Pinelli went to Slovenia and was also one of the top scorers at the U18 worlds, despite limited minutes at times. Pinelli is a highly intelligent player who can make tough plays consistently. He has the small-area skills to make checkers miss and the vision to make plays off the flank and under pressure. He competes well enough to win puck battles even if he’s not overly physical. His skating is elusive, with a decent first step and ability to 10-2 around defenders, but he lacks separation speed. His toolkit doesn’t scream “first-round pick” and he’s listed higher than where my eyes think he should be due to just how much he’s shown he can score at various levels. In a sentence, Pinelli projects as a middle-six NHL forward who may frustrate a coach if he doesn’t score.

49. Vladislav Lukashevich, LHD, Yaroslavl-MHL
May 23, 2003 | 6-foot-2 | 167 pounds
Skating: Average
Puck Skills: Below-average
Hockey Sense: Average
Compete: Average
Lukashevich’s athletic tools stand out immediately and draw NHL teams to him as a prospect. He’s 6-foot-2 and a strong skater, with good speed and flashes of high-end skating with his edgework. He shows instances of NHL-quality skill and playmaking. He wasn’t a top scorer as a junior, but was on a stacked team and did get a lot of responsibility on that club. Lukashevich’s offense will likely come from a good first pass and rushing pucks up as opposed to being an NHL power-play type. Defensively he’s fine but not amazing. You figure with his size, feet and not being soft he’ll progress more in that area over time. A late injury ended his season and prevented him from going to the U18 worlds. In a sentence, Lukashevich projects as a steady third-pair defenseman who can chip in some offense. |

While watching a shift by shift of Dynamo Moskva, the MHL winning team that Dmitri Zlodeyev played on this past season.
WHAM
https://www.eliteprospect.../539224/nikita-v.-novikov
This draft eligible giant.
6'4" 207 lb LHD. July bday.
On defence, he uses his raw size to take up a lot of space, block lanes, and get his stick in wherever he can, EPRinkside.com 2021
He certainly does everything they say there.
Mobile, he is quick for 6'4". Acceleration for a big man is quite surprising.
Really good at using his length to knock pucks away. No problem leaning on guys either. Wasn't ever overly physical but did throw a nice neutral zone hit.
5 points in 7 games at the u18s this season for Russia.
There is some real good potential for a steady PK, 5v5 bottom 4 player here.
With some maturity, could be looking at somewhere between Joel Edmundson/Marco Scandella type defender.
I wouldn't be putting a blog like this if he didn't really peak my interest.

I seen him in 2 games of u18 and forgot his name. He was a pretty steady defender.
More than happy if they selected him. |

Devils in the details podcast, shift by shift. They have some names you just haven't seen on lists.
I'm actually watching the gold medal u18 game again right now. Almost half way through the 2nd period.
He is getting PP, PK time as well as a doesn't seem like a regular 5v5 shift but I think that's because of the special teams time.
His stride could use some work. Looks like a 17 year old who is growing into his 6'4" frame. He's got sort of Tryamkin Russian defender feel to him. Maybe without the attitude he could be what most hoped out of Tree.
Certainly in rounds 5-7, I don't think would be a bad pick.
Younger player in the draft, so room for growth but without an attribute that stands out, might be one of those "sea of granlunds" types.
DAmnit that "sea of granlunds" doesn't leave my head when looking at prospects. It probably has helped though because not only does the player need to be good at aspects of hockey, has to have something that stands out to make them have another purpose at the next level. |

There's a strange correlation happening between Vantel and Ruby. Both get super "excited" over big dumb defensemen.
Matier is a RHD and looked lost with the puck a lot of the time for team Canada.
Ethan Del Mastro is someone I would consider if he made it to the 4th round but when do you start picking the no non sense defenders. In the 3rd round you could have Brayden Point. Instead teams are taking a defender because he can hit late 2nd/early 3rd now a days it seems. Drafting so (frank)ed up.
That poop is how Ryan Lindgren and Markus Niemelainen get picked ahead of Adam Fox.
Andrew Nielsen in the 3rd round in '15 was a joke by Toronto.
A pick to draft everyone of those big defenders. Wouldn't be reaching for them early ever. |
