Good trade for both sides IMO. Detroit turned an expiring contract into a pick. Colorado added a very solid (and underrated) defensive defender who is already a familiar face.

I'd hoped for a 3rd but expected a 4th. I still think Bernier would be a good fit for Colorado to backup Grubauer.

So they are capped out if they retain salary on 3 deals, right? Makes me a bit nervous using one on Nemeth, considering Bernier, Glendening, and a couple others are likely getting moved. I think it's safe to say Ryan is off the table, but might still see Gagner, Helm, maybe Merrill get dealt also. There's usually that one unexpected move each year, I just hope they didn't blow a future deal by getting a 4th with retained salary on Nemeth.

Regardless, more Cholowski and might see some Lindstrom in a few games.

Minnesota State goaltender Dryden McKay — indeed named after the Montreal Canadiens legend of the same position — is the only 2021 Hobey Baker Award finalist who was never drafted.

Highly touted forwards Cole Caufield (Wisconsin / Montreal Canadiens) and Shane Pinto (North Dakota / Ottawa Senators) were the others up for the NCAA MVP trophy, and both were drafted in the top 32 of the 2019 class. (Caufield won it Friday.)

But McKay, 23, needed more time to develop. As goalies tend to do.

McKay’s numbers fall under the category of wow. Through three seasons, he has posted a 75-14-4 record, with save percentages of .927, .942 and .931. He’s had 10 shutouts in each of his past two campaigns. These stats make the kid worthy of his handle.

“It was actually my mom’s idea to name me Dryden. My dad is always quick to point that out,” McKay told Wes Gilbertson of the Calgary Sun. “I think the story was I was going to be Dylan and then she saw the book The Game by Ken Dryden, his famous book, and she was looking at it and she goes, ‘Dryden… that’s a cool name.’ She brought it to my dad, and he was instantly all about it.”

Dryden’s dad, 57-year-old Ross, was a pro who tended 34:47 of net in his single NHL backup appearance, for the 1990-91 Hartford Whalers.

While Dryden is eligible for a fourth university season, it’ll be interesting if an NHL franchise takes a flyer on him.

McKay is listed at five-foot-11 and 175 pounds.

The average height of an NHL goalie is six-foot-three. The shortest active NHL netminder today is Pittsburgh’s Casey DeSmith at six feet. DeSmith, too, was an undrafted late bloomer. So, we’re not betting against a goalie named Dryden.

Good analysis, Svan. The Wings get another pick, Avs get a pretty ok defender, 3rd line/fill-in guy. Gives us a chance to see more of Cholo or Lindstrom. Not upset about this move at all. Looking to see what the next domino is....Gagner, Glennie, Bernie, Staal....not in that order...

I really don't know how Yzerman will reach the cap floor next season. Unless he takes some cap dumps, makes a big trade or signs a few UFA's.

That's not good. Goalies are giants now compared to the 80s. I mean if he can stop the puck then size shouldn't be the determining factor. But if it's even? I'm taking the bigger goalie everytime.

It makes me feel old. Sakic was the one Avs player I couldn't hate during the old rivalry. Sakic was also huge for Team Canada so many times. 👍 Now both he and Yzerman are outstanding GM's. Nemeth will slot back to the depth role he belongs in. I agree. It's a good trade for both teams. I'm hoping Yzerman and Verbeek can draft the next Point or Kucherov with that 4th round pick. 🙂

Hmmm that's a late 1st. I'll need more than that for Mantha. He frustrates the $hit out of me. But the value needs to be right. Driedger would be a good option to sign this summer if we can't bring Bernier back. 👍

Yeah they are both outstanding GMs. Yzerman will have them heading in the right direction in no time. He's a very smart GM. Stockpiling draft picks, drafting well...future will be very bright. He's also the one Wings player from the rivalry I just could not hate. He essentially put the Tampa Roster together that won the cup. As a die hard Avs fan I will go as far as to say he has one of the greatest minds in all of hockey. Mad respect to his career and what he's accomplished as a player and as a GM

Maybe Stevie trades Ryan + Bernier(1/2 salary retained) to the Bolts for Maca-leaky and a 2nd . The Bolts put Ryan on LTIR, Bernier becomes a better back-up. Not enough cap dump for Tampa though.....They would do better with Boone Jenner and Savard.....and then look to make another trade for a back-up.
