While getting a top pick and a bonified super star would build some excitement and help revenues, it doesn't always equal cups. Last year, six of the top ten scorers in the league were top 3 picks, but none were on Tampa's roster. In 2019, five of the top 10 scorers were top 3 picks, but none were on St. Louis. In 2018, six of the top 10 scorers were top 3 picks, but none were on Washington. None of the past 10 top picks have won cups, and two of the past 15 top picks have won cups. In the past 30 years, only six top picks have won cups with the team that drafted them. McDavid, Matthews, McKinnon sell a lot of jerseys, and help fill the seats, but they aren't winning cups.
A few teams like Chicago and Pittsburg got a bunch of top 3 picks back to back to back and they have had success, but other teams like Edmonton, Colorado, Buffalo, NJ & NYR have done the same with no success.
I thought the core we were building around was Mantha & Larkin, but Yzerman made it clear last week that Mantha wasn't part of it when he said he was going to eventually trade him for assets. He said when he took the job that we're not even close, and he was right. I think he'll put together a team of the right players, not necessarily the "best" players and I think it'll work.

Prevaricate and its synonyms "lie" and "equivocate" all refer to playing fast and loose with the truth. "Lie" is the bluntest of the three. When you accuse someone of lying, you are saying he or she was intentionally dishonest, no bones about it. "Prevaricate" is less accusatory and softens the bluntness of "lie," usually implying that someone is evading the truth rather than purposely making false statements. "Equivocate" is similar to "prevaricate," but it generally implies that someone is deliberately using words that have more than one meaning as a way to conceal the truth.

For Pete’s sake, I meant it as “if I were storytelling”, making something up. It’s was meant as irony. I’m sorry if that wasn’t clear enough. Maybe understand that I’m not trying to intentionally mislead anyone, that was a joke. It’s meant to bring forth a chuckle |

I'm a simple man. I want my favorite team to win hockey games.
Wings reached 39 points with yesterday's OT loss -- the same total as last year's team, in 23 fewer games (last year's team picked up their last two points of the season in the second last game before the break).
It may not feel like it since this team is still nowhere close to contending, but they are massively better this year than last year. And I'm very pleased with that.
Speaking of draft position, in the past I've argued in the comments that the NHL should switch to Gold drafting with teams being able to declare themselves "out of playoff contention" at some point during the season (once their fate is practically if not necessarily mathematically sealed) and start collecting "Gold points" for draft position.
If we had Gold drafting in place, and Detroit declared back in February or March when their record was barely ahead of last season's pace, they'd pretty much be a lock for first overall by now.
Something to think about. |

The new 2 wins in 5 year limit that starts next year is a good step forward. Also the 10 spot limit to move up. |

You're reading way too much into this.
I don't come across words that I don't know the definition of very often so I figured there may be a few more people wondering the same thing.

I mean, maybe.
But also, they're not stupid. At that point probability wise they had like a fraction of a percent of a chance to make the playoffs. They knew they were cooked.
And they're also professionals. Even if your team's out of it, you still have a lot to play for. Ice time. A new contract. Pride.
You might get some players deciding to quit giving an effort, but that happens anyway when teams are for all practical purposes out of the playoff hunt. No official declaration necessary.
Anyway, I think a few bruised player egos is a small price to pay for a system in which, as a fan, every game matters and winning is always better than losing. |

They’re a member of MENSA, and literally remind everyone that they’re the “only card carrying genius in the room”.
I will say this, though. He got me to stop using the word “bugger”. Like, “that kid’s a cute little bugger”. I won’t list the definition here, but look it up if you don’t know. Yeesh, that one got out of hand.
The other word I stopped using was “gyped”. I’d thought it was spelled with a J. The correct spelling indicates a slander against Gypsies as all being thieves and criminals. That was another embarrassing moment.... |

I've lived in Europe and 'experienced' Gypsies (I've even spoken to a few). I have no interest in ever doing either of those two things again for a long as I live.

I remember Mick making fun of Ken Daniels when he was first hired to be the Red Wings play by play guy. Ken would say "Detroy-It." The WJR guys made it even funnier by playing the old Edmund Fitzgerald song. Instead of "Fitz-Gerald!" it was "Detroy-It!"

Yes! Old HNIC broadcasts crack me up with it. It’s like the Alice Cooper scene in Wayne’s World. “Hey Alice, isn’t Milwaukee an old Indian word?” “Yes, pronounced Mil-ee-wauh-kay, and it means, ‘the good land’”.
We’re not worthy!! |

As far as I can tell the De-TROY-it pronunciation is pretty much exclusive to Ontario natives born before 1960 or so. It's completely inexplicable to me how or why this happened and why it persists.
