I would love to see Ryan stay at a reasonable cost, he can move up and down the top 9 forwards. The youngsters need to get top six minutes and Development. I’m if-e with Fabri, he won’t make a full season. |

I like Bobby and what he brings and if he is near the same more than reasonable cost.If he is signed before the ex-draft he can be exposed as well.....but I think the Wings already have met that requirement. |

They have indeed. Nielsen, Panik (or Namestnikov), DeKeyser, and Fulcher.
I would be surprised if we re-signed any of the UFAs before the expansion draft. I think Gagner, Ryan, or Bernier on an affordable 1 or 2 year deal would instantly become Seattle's most attractive target. |

I'm cool with Gagner and/or Ryan coming back on cheap short-term deals.
This offseason is different from past ones because the Red Wings really don't have any awful players with term left that desperately need to get jettisoned, other than maybe Nielsen. Yzerman I think has more or less fixed the "the entire bottom half of this roster is awful" problem; now it's about growing or acquiring high-end talent for the top half of the roster.
Presumably Filppula, Staal, and Helm will not be retained. Djoos and Brome I think probably won't get qualified (or, even if they are, are probably starting in the AHL). Someone (I think Svech most likely) will get claimed by Seattle. I think there's a 50-50 chance Nielsen gets bought out. Glendening I think will probably get re-signed but I would not be upset if he didn't. That's already a lot of bodies potentially out the door.
Gagner, Ryan, and Bernier I think are still very competent stopgaps and I'd be cool bringing them back. Would be very open to bringing Merrill back too.
Of course Yzerman will probably come in with something totally out of left field that nobody will be expecting. |

I am not sure we have room for Bobby Ryan next year. I appreciate what he brought to the table but, we need to bring in some younger guys full time in the next couple seasons. I don't think you can bring them all in at once.
Bertuzzi - Larkin - UFI/Ryan?
Vrana - Rasmussen - Zadina
Namestnikov - Veleno - Erne
Smith - Glendening - Panik
UFI/Merril? - Hronek
Dekeyser - Seider
Cholowski - Stetcher/Lindsrom
Bernier

I'm open to more Bobby Ryan! This is a young team and a veteran presence is very important in the room to help show the way, especially the right veterans like Ryan, Gagner and Bernier. They will help to even out the highs and many lows to come. Without that veteran presence, you end up with a Lord of the Flies situation (nod to Ryan's book club)! |

With the cap being tight once again next season and Yzerman on a mission to get the Wings back to respectability why would Detroit bring back Ryan? Lol. |

Your reaction here is extreme IMO. I think the correct attitude toward potentially re-signing Ryan is indifference.
He is not going to make a lot of money, he is not going to get a lot of term, and he is a thoroughly average all-around third-line contributor. Every team, including very bad ones, needs a couple of guys who can tread water in the middle six and Ryan can do that.
Is he part of the future? Heck no. Does it have to be Ryan specifically? No, there are tons of essentially interchangeable options Detroit could go with instead. But also, why not Ryan? He knows the team and seems to want to be here. |

Any potential Staal like trades that we couple possibly consider again? I think everyone agrees that was a home run and Stall was better than expected. Maybe Loui Eriksson? James Neal (2 years though ouch)? Saad? |

Teams that dodged a bullet this year (Tampa in a huge way) with players that were able to be on LTIR are going to have to pay the piper at some point. Chicago was without Toews, Tampa without Kucherov, the flat cap is going to take its toll sooner or later. Detroit has several RFAs to deal with, but still have about 50mil to play with. I did like Staal. I assumed he’d be an upgrade to guys who were hurt and retired, but he legitimately made life better.
I’ve learned the hard “never say never” lesson too many times with Yzerman to say “absolutely not” to anything at this point. It’s worth watching for, and maybe worth doing a list of the potentials. Thanks for throwing that in today! |

Smith had some good runs this year. Like a lot of the back and forth guys, he could have a really solid game and then have a rough run. I really wonder if Veleno will need top center minutes in the AHL. If they really want him to play up the middle, he needs a lot more reps than he’d be getting in Detroit. I would like to see him spend the summer with Glendening. Luke used summer sessions to turn his faceoff game completely around. Glenny is a beast in the gym and a few months of those two working could really help JV make the next step forward

My insane, never-going-to-happen wish for this offseason is offer-sheeting Elias Pettersson and then bringing back Tatar as a UFA.
EDIT: I'm aware that it's probably a bad idea. |

Eriksson is a possibility, but the cost of giving up a 1st or a prospect might be too much for the Nucks to give up and they could simply buy Louie out and offer a lesser contract, but a better player for cap space. Virtanen may have took himself out of a trade, but if he did some kind of criminal act then they simply terminate his contract. But the Nucks still need more cap space to sign Pettersson and Hughes. I would hope that they trade Schmidt to Detroit for Cholo, who is from near there, and a the Oiler's 2nd. Schmidt is the LD the Wings need and is on a 4 yr x almost $6M contract.
Oh, and Saad is a FA. And Neal...Kenny can't afford the tribute to get rid of him. |

I hate to see our Red Wings loose any games but....
two Wings loses and a New Jersey win would be a great way to end this season. |
