You don't need every player to be everything, that's why you have a 23 man roster. Offensive skills are hard to find, you just can't teach that into someone, either you've got it or you don't. Get better players around him and the other core players so they don't have to be everything all the time. They can more easily manage his deployment if he's not the only weapon they have. - LeftCoaster
You can drool all you want over him, I will continue to dislike him. I can't stand players who are defensively clueless. |

Ya, that +/- is impressive. - Reubenkincade
You see, this is why the Canucks never win. They get a great offensive young player and the fans want to run him out of town because he's not great defensively. Again, you need offensive talent, most great offensive players are not great defensively because they cheat offensively.
Paul Coffey's in the HHOF and he had no idea how to play defense.
Didn't Bo Horvat win the green jacket a few years ago too? |

Not drooling, just saying his skills are required if you want to win at some point. |

Paul Coffey could hit and tie up a stick in front of the net because he was strong enough to do so.
Quinine on the other hand would get pushed around by my daughter who weighs 130 lbs. |

That's been JB's wish from day one. Sbiza, Gudbranson, Tryamkin, Myers. And here we are today with a dumpster fire of a D. Again I hope Shaw has some input how to fix this mess.

That skillset is better suited for forwards, not a weak ass defenseman |

His first year was stellar. His second year he sucked. People need to give him some time to turn it around, he slumped but he's an elite offensive player who's highly motivated. Like Codes said, D that come to the Canucks have their stats decline because the system is trash. Hopefully Shaw is able to figure some things out and implement a capable NHL system. |

He's 21 - offensive contributions from the blueline is extremely important. |

Yup. I am sure Nucker and Neem will be around sometime today to tell me all about the small guys on Tampa. |

How about the clean sweep for McDavid, got every single first place vote for the Hart Trophy, first time since Wayne Gretzky in the 80's. |

Sure but at least play somewhat responsible D.
Shaw will probably give the kid some tough love.

You can teach defense, with better systems play and better players around him, instead of high-priced older "character guys", he'll be fine. He's young. In about six years Benning will put it all together |

I'd be concerned if the whole team and entire D corps were playing very good defense and whenever Hughes was on that ice everything went to poop. However, we all know the team D sucks and other defenders look just as bad.
Fix the system and you'll see a marked improvement in Hughes' game. |

The whole team system sucks, won't really improve until they get a better coach or the coach changes the way he sees the game being played.
Bo Horvat was -30 his second year, I'm sure it'll get better with time and experience for Quinn.
The Canucks had THREE plus players this year, Roussel, Benn and Rathbone who only played 8 games. |

They (NJ) can draft the other Hughes boy and have the trio. They'd have to add to Smith though. |

Why is it that Canucks fans get all giddy about these shiny offensive players, that are beyond useless defensively, like Hughes and Goldobin?
I will wait for the "defense can be taught" comments. - Reubenkincade
How about Burkie’s “You can’t teach size””
comment? |
