I saw a report that they were planning to protect Josh Archibald. I don't want to disrespect Josh, but he's not the sort of player that seems like he should end up among the top 7 forwards on a team with any depth and age. - TartanBill
Extra cap space and not enough forwards worth protecting. We should probably give them a call.
That's ridiculous to even ask him to take that. That insults me. - nateca444
5 million. No matter what Ovi’s contract is Malkin is not Ovi. Ovi could score one timers until he’s 60, Geno’s abilities require skills that are aging along with him. 5 million is a fair price.
I think it's really stupid for guys to sign massive deals for 8 years... especially since the cap will increase by a good amount during that time. I like what Mahomes did with his deal where his salary is a % of the salary cap.
Also - is this an unofficial done deal? Otherwise, wouldnt Edmonton have to protect him in the draft versus not as a UFA? Does Edmonton not have any forwards to protect? Have to think they could get a nice deal by taking an extra forward from a team that cant protect a guy. Like us and Zucker.
Honestly, that would be pretty insulting if I'm Malkin. Malkin just had a really good year. People act like the guy is way past doing anything of substance and he is just sort of here for the heck of it. A $6-7M/year deal makes sense if I'm the Penguins.
Because it was like the day before Chia got fired? - Feds91Stammer
That and it was some random old guy from the KHL that didn't even have that good of a season. Absolutely bonkers contract and I wish I could be a fly in the wall during those negotiations. Just imagine Chia outbidding himself. And he got an NTC!
Engelland one is up there for me just because they had to clarify it was per year. - Tojo.
To this day I believe the story that there was a miscommunication between Burke and Treliving that it was supposed to be a 2.3 Million total for 3 years and somehow it got offered and signed at 2.3 per year for 3 years
Everyone saved face after the fact, but that story was out there and it makes more sense than the contract that got signed
