Does Gaudreau want to resign in Calgary? In his exit interview he said two things: he said he never said he didn't want to be in Calgary - and two: something about resigning "if the owners want".
So bear with me, as I indulge in over analyzing again (it's the offseason so why not, Francis wrote an article about my point that there was no news about Treliving) - does that second statement translate into he'll resign only if he gets a massive contract?
Also, another angle is that if this team is truly "tight knit", perhaps Gaudreau could be waiting to see what happens with Gio and Monahan, maybe in the end it's about trading a 3rd or 2nd to keep Gio and resign Gaudreau? |

He said...
“If Tree and the owners are happy with the way I've played here in the past six to seven years and it's something we can figure out,” Gaudreau said at the Flames' end-of-season player avails. “I would love to do that. I love the city of Calgary. I love playing here."
I personally have no time for Eric Francis who has said 100% he is traded. Has said he wants to go home. Etc. Etc. No time for his "stories".
As far as Gio, I don't recall Gio taking out Staal after Johnny almost lost his finger. And I personally think he blames the "Gio cap" for not being able to get a better deal last time. He gave in to play. As much as Johnny has been silent in the playoffs, what has Gio done? The only series the Flames won in years was without Gio. |

We can speculate till the cows come home whether or not JG wants to be here.
I "speculate" that JG was one of the players that told Tkachuk to tone it down at the players-only meeting. JG does not like physical hockey, and Tkachuk causes games to get nasty. JG is an amazing talent, but he is a floater. Great for regular-season games but useless when things get tough.
You trade JG because as of July 28 your options are much more limited. Its asset management.

Can I ask what's going on with your name? I think if you went drinking with some Newfies you would change your mind. Hard to hate Newfies.

You trade Gaudreau asap (before his no-trade kicks in) because at 6.75 he's 👌, but at the money and term he's gonna be making on his new contract he's gonna be an anchor. Plus we won't be seriously competitive for at least 2-3 years, so better manage the asset. |

Just think, if he had had Austin Matthews as his C he'd be making 10.9M |

"Figure out", yeah pretty appropriate comment out of Gaudreau, but I lean towards him wanting to cash in big. I don't think they'll drag out the decision about trading him down to the last day. I think they have an internal deadline to sign him, and if they can't sign him before the draft, that's when he gets traded.
I don't mind Francis, he's pretty entertaining. I was more so hinting at the possibility that he lurks here, same with Kelly Hrudey (what's up?!) he's said some things that made me wonder the same. There was too much group think going on with Kylington, he made weak plays, but lots of fans defended him - until he was benched, put on waivers and not claimed, and it took all that for people to change their minds about him. Even Mangiapane, I knew he was special without the team Canada accolades... so it's ok when fans disagree IMO |

Are any undersized soft wingers making 10.9 for the Oilers?
And it was by no means a dig at the flames. A certain guy comparable to JG who plays 1st line LW in Toronto is making 10.9 per. For riding shotgun to an elite scorer. |

I think if JG isn't relied on to be THE point getter for (X) team he'd thrive and the whole discussion about his soft play would disappear. He needs a better support cast and not be the only one to put up points. He's not McDavid/Matthews but he's better than he gets credit for.
Meh this team deserves a few digs... |

You mean how Marner doesn't get any heat in TO for being too soft altho he has a more solid support cast?
No offense, but they are peas in a pod. Both extremely talented offensively, but soft for the rest of the game. If Joh... McJohnny were on Matthews wing he would be putting up Marner numbers too, and catching heat for not being able to perform in the playoffs like Marner is now. The only difference is about 4M a year because Calgary never employed Dubas. |

Agree 100%. Imagine Gaudreau with Matthews. Once upon a time in Calgary, Monahan also showed an elite scoring touch & thats when Gaudreau really hit a ton of points. Thing is, Gaudreau wanted to play & felt power played into signing that 6.75 mill contract. He was easily worth Tarasenko money back then. He isnt going to give us any home town discount. If he wants out, he'll stand firm on $10mill per but if he's serious, he'll sign for 8.0mill which is ok by me. I think Tkachuk & Gaudreau will be the new ceiling & that will likely land at 8.0mill per. |

Gaudreaus body language looked way happier when he was playing with Tkachuk & Lindholm & monahan injured. He knew Monahan wasnt on top of his game & it was affecting his walking stats coming up for new contract negotiations. So I dont think Monahan & Gio really factor in too much to his decision. If Tre went to them & said we are capping the ceiling at your new contract of lets say 8.0 mill per, I would hope he stays & resigns with us. We are a better team with Gaudreau & Tkachuk. With Lindholm at centre, we have a decent top line. Smart moves with letting Gio go to Seattle & perhaps a solid trade of Monahan (although I wouldnt mind keeping him as well & build a 2nd line around him & Magpie), this team could easily retool to get in the playoffs next year. |

True(ish)... I think Marner on the Flames (swap McJonny for Marner) and there is no way Marner puts up points the way Gaudreau (can). What I was saying is that Gaudreau doesn't have the elite talent of a Matthews or McDavid but is a superior player than a Marner (et al). |

Agreed! Scoring was an issue this season and Tkachuk had less than a stellar campaign. He needs to be better. I just don't see Lindholm as a top line center. To me thats the secret sauce and probably the hardest to find/acquire, thus the Eichel pipe dream. |

From what I hear the ask for Eichel is, it would gut us & gut our future. We have a chance to add some pretty good prospects this draft because Covid has really impacted a large shelf of players that will fall as late as the 2nd & 3rd rounds.
Hearing Tarasenko wanting out, & has been linked to Flames. Immediately they speculate for Tkachuk but you wonder if its Monahan to St Louis for Taransenko + something. |
