True. And he helped them exploit a loophole that allowed them to exceed the league cap by nearly $18 mill. Analytics didn't win the Cup. - TommyGTrain
Should also be stated that Yzerman built that team. But since we are out here talking nonsense did you know Jon Cooper is a lawyer?
Yay useless information that proves my point because reasons!
Burke said it best with regards to analytics being a tool to use and that every team has some sort of reliance on that data. However Twitter, Leafs fans and keyboard warriors will tell you that analytics is what makes the world go ‘round. |

That's EXACTLY the part that makes no sense to me! Everything is open to interpretation by each team. There's no standard across all teams. Who defines what a "hit" is, or what a "takeaway" or what a "great scoring chance" is? My interpretation will be different than the next guy's.
I remember watching some game this year between Vegas and I forget who else, and they had a stat that Vegas had like 70 hits or something. It was crazy. Commentators were even discussing how outlandish it was.
I can see how it could be useful when comparing players on the same time because you're more likely to have consistent interpretations, but to compare players on different teams? I don't believe it. - TheMessiah94
That's why they generally don't use those stats.
You focus on clear quantitative stuff. Zone entries, shot locations, etc.
Use the stuff that is standardized and easy to track, not subjective things like hits where the in-arena person tracks them and determines what is and isn't a hit.

I'll say it:
Analytics are dumb and not very useful. Nobody has won a Cup with fancy charts and stats yet. The eye test is a far more useful, proven tool. There is a reason why scouts get paid to travel and watch people play in person.
The only time I would concede analytics could help is if you are trying to decide between 2 very equally rated players and you needed a tie-breaker. Thats it! - TommyGTrain
you obviously don't know who Michael Peterson, Tampa's Director of Analytics, is. Tampa Bay is at the forefront of the analytics campaign and Peterson has BriseBois' ear with most decisions and Yzerman's before that and has his name on two cups now. Analytics aren't a golden bullet that makes decisions for you, and nobody that actually understands the analytics would tell you that they do. The people that think all decisions should be made through analytics and the people that think no decisions should be made with analytics have a lot more in common than they think - neither understands the analytics. |

BriseBois added
Blake Coleman
Barclay Goodrow
Pat Maroon
Jan Rutta
Luke Schenn
David Savard
Curtis McElhinney
Not to mention Bogosian and Shattenkirk the year before.
No Denying Yzerman built the core of that team, but it's been three years since Yzerman left and the team has turned over a really big chunk of it's supporting cast in that time.

I think if they just called the "advanced stats/analytics" "stats" they would be more accepted. People use stats to measure players all the time by saying this guy is a 30 goal scorer, this one's a ppg player. We make arguments for the hall of fame based off statistics, and those statistics are variable too. Goalies are judged on SV% when places like the Garden notoriously jacked up the other teams shots when Hank was in net. Players score empty net goals and rack up 2nd assists but they count as "goals" and "points". Saying that advanced stats shouldn't be used because there is human error involved, and then pointing to the eye test as a better means of evaluation is very ironic.
This isn't directed at you btw, mostly just agreeing with your point. |

there was nothing analytical about what the coyotes did, despite how some people in the media tried to push Chayka as some sort of boy genius.
Nobody who actually publicly worked in the stats community saw him as anything more than a businessman. He was never part of the hockey stats world. |

If you were looking for a stats guy i'd point you at the Canes Assistant GM Eric Tulsky instead.
A guy with a Ph.D in chemistry from UC-Berkeley and B.A.'s in chemistry and physics from Harvard.
The guys started in hockey as a blogger on a flyers website in 2011. He just loves the game and trying to make the things on the ice more black and white. He started around when Francis took over as GM and really is THE guy evaluating in the front office these days. It's been nothing but steady, consistent improvement for the team since he got on board. |

The Panthers were supposed to have a good analytics dept prior to Zito and Quennville(they didn't), and likely had a great deal to do with Gallant's departure. As far as I know, those folks are no longer there. |

They built a good analytics department, kept the guys for less than a year, then let Dale Tallon blow up the front office.
They never had time to even start building the team. |

Word is Francis has a set price for side deals of a 1st and a 3rd. Regardless of who or what. You want him to pick one guy specifically, or not pick a guy? 1st and a 3rd. Period. Otherwise he's just taking the best player you leave exposed. |
