Certain names on that list wouldn’t do a peewee C team. Thank god Karine is there to save everyone’s ass on a daily basis.

Hains: You’ve Got to Know When to Hold ‘em

I couldn’t have said better yesterday when I said it was the calm before the storm in Montreal. The expected storm started shortly after I posted my article when multiple reports indicated that Carey Price had been asked to waive his no movement clause to be left unprotected for the expansion draft.

- Karine Hains

hello Karine!

you wrote: Bergevin got the weapons of mass destructions out and asked his franchise goaltender to lift his no movement clause in order to leave him exposed in the expansion draft.

are we sure of this? how do you know it is not the other way around? (Price asking MB to be left unprotected)

True but she’s probably the closest person to know what’s going on. Why would Price waive to protect a backup goalie that will play 30 games this year? I don’t know, it’s pretty weird right now
- MONSTERSofMETALZ

This is what has me confused aswell. And why would Seattle not pick price if available? They won’t be anywhere near the cap so starting on day one with a top 5 goalie in the league let’s them stay competitive for a few seasons in until they get established. Think they would pass that up to pick Brett kulak? I doubt it.

well if what Francis was saying is true, that he gives a lot of importance to cap space, he'll most likely stay away...

But there are only going to be a few players available that will have big cap hits. Most of the guys they will be choosing from will be 3rd liners and 3rd pairing d men making a couple million bucks a year.

Seems like a pretty smart move by Bergevin. He basically left the least palatable contracts available. If they take Price, and Weber on LTIR, Habs have a ton of $ and can re-balance the team around the kids. If they don't take Price it will be one of Kulak, Drouin or maybe Byron...most likely Kulak. They might even take Price and trade him back retaining salary and taking a 1st and someone like Poehling etc.. Either way Bergevin has made the decision much harder for Seattle.

sure, but the cap implications are kind of important if you consider that Price still has 5 more years left on his contract. it isn't just about this year.

SEA grabbing Kulak is probably the most ideal scenario. I doubt this "grab Price and trade him back" thing happens but it could be interesting if it does.

No but Seattle likely won’t be a contender for a few seasons with the garbage they will get to choose from. A few good players will be taken from the good teams but that’s not gonna be enough for them to worry about being in a cap crunch for the next few years.

That’s what I think. Maybe they’ll flip him for picks or prospect to another team needing a 6th D or spare D.

I have a hard time believing they're starting a new franchise with the mindset that they aren't gonna win right away, and that they might as well grab this huge AF contract... I don't know exactly what the expectations will be in SEA but I'm pretty sure they'll want to have success and win games from the get-go.

It would suck to lose Price but if they do then its full rebuild and they have the $ to do it faster and a decent young core. I would think Bergevin and Francis have spoken.

this. it most likely isn't a "gamble", either MB knows Price is staying, or Carey actually wants out of MTL.

Yes so grabbing a top 5 goalie over a bottom pair d man would help them win games. To not be a complete door mat for the rest of the league should be his goal. I dunno, I hope you guys are right, but if I’m Francis and I have the opportunity to pick a franchise goalie for free to be competitive from game one, I’m pretty sure I’m doing it.

guys guys, the important thing is that they select great 2 way d-man, and superstar power play QB, shayne gostisbehere from philadelphia.

I don't think he wants out but if he has a choice of teams Seattle would probably be his 1st choice after MTL. He's in complete control of his destination and he doesn't look like a Richard for not waiving.

there are a few decent goalies available at a much better cap hit...maybe not the same star power for marketing but more $ palatable.

Well then that’s a different scenario. If price asked and he wants to go play in Seattle, then I respect that. But if bergevin is doing this thinking Seattle won’t take him so he gets to keep him and Allen. That’s a massive gamble
