Mock Draft posted
https://www.nhl.com/flyer...elphia-flyers/c-325733268 - bmeltzer
Surprised by a few things, but most notably seeing Stankoven fall out of the 1st round.
Do you have any more insight why in 2021 the Flyers don't have much luck with Russian players? I know Provorov is Russian, but he was in NA for at least a couple years prior to getting drafted. Is it dealing with Russian agents, Russian players don't see the draw of Philadelphia, internal concerns or is there still a bitter distaste for Philadelphia due to 1976? They just don't seem to have much luck and most of the time don't sign their Russian draft picks. |

Weird looking nanny.
The only ways I can make sense of the Oleksiak signing then are:
1. There will be more market value signings via trade/UFA, at least on D. Oleksiak is the tip of the iceberg.
2. Ultra-cynical, based on what Bill says about JO and the Gourde surgery (which I did not know about): they are taking on some guys who will drag the team down when playing positions and mins which are above their talent grade.
3. Just a salary floor move, with not huge downside. - PT21
Stars were trying to re-sign him. Like Larsson, Francis probably used an offer that the Stars had on the table and just sprinkled a little more cash on top. |

You left out 2 words, Bill: "by design"
 - PT21
I call it tanking. The league afforded Seattle the opportunity to be competitive with the expansion draft rules and they decided against it. Of course they will make more moves but this is a lackluster roster given their options. |

So are coming to terms with retaining salary to move Jake? Or are we still hoping they package him? |

He trades for Ellis, and you are giving him an F. I'm glad you weren't my teacher - bradster
F for the draft, not overall. I want Fletcher to trade that pick. |

I think retaining salary/taking back a similar salary was always going to be the path with Voracek. |

You’re judging them as of today like they are playing tomorrow though, there will be deals for them to make throughout the summer. - ClaudeFather
I believe that Francis set the price for taking contracts that other teams wanted gone so high, that the some GM's figured they would call his bluff. Francis did not blink and either painted himself into a corner, or, more likely made it clear what the price would be to take on such contracts. Now (post expansion draft) the price may have even gone up, but I have little doubt that GM's will be calling about the high priced/long termed players they would like removed from their own rosters. |

Great job Bill. I always enjoy a good Mock Draft. Sillinger would be nice but I suspect he'll be gone by the time the Flyers make their selection (barring a trade).
I really like Brandt Clarke. I'd love to see the Flyers move up to draft him depending on the price. Maybe we can develop our own Erik Karlsson. Clarke is more responsible defensively and more physical. Loves playing hockey and is very creative. - dubc55
Well, sigh, if Fletcher decides this is the only thing he can do, I guess as fans we have to stick it out another 2-3 years until the current contracts are up and this next batch of prospects are ready to play and see what we have. |

That contract seems to suggest they envision him as a fundamental building block.

A stretch maybe, but I'd be thinking about Sebastien Cossa if he's still there at 13. |

Yeah, but I like it, a BIG center who can skate and has a great shot.

Eh. (frank) 'competitiveness'. (frank) what the league "wanted" them to do.
And (frank) tanking: their players are going to fight like tooth and nail every min on the ice to show the world they are better than they have been given credit for.
They are trying to be winners down the line. They seem to have a fan base waiting to support them. They came into being with cash at a time when cash is the largest asset. These are great assets and I think they have only 1 obligation how to use them. Try to do what they can to win down the line.
That. And only that.
Now if you can please explain the Oleksiak signing. That's the one I can't wrap my head around. That's the ONLY signing that sticks out. Unless its Oleksiak-Larsson as the 1st pairing for the next couple of years.

Jake /Jvr/ghost all have value of salary retained. If 50% retained that would give fletch much leverage. Teams looking for those type player would certainly be teams that believe they are contenders now. Getting a Jake at 4 mil or Jvr at 3.5 or ghost at 2.25 is very valuable. If fletch can retain the salary he would open roughly 9 mil over next 2/3 years and could use that to make a move or 2 and use his current 9 mil to sign his rfa’s.
I’d love for him to retain the salary and gain as much draft capital as possible or a combo of draft capital/ very young higher end prospects.

Their only real obligation is to turn a profit.

The only thing that scares me if the Flyers select Wallstedt or Cossa is the media and fans. 100% the moment after they draft one of them there will be articles after articles about how their is no confidence in Hart. Let's just face the fact that Hart will most likely be the Flyers future starter. Ok he had a bad year, but the team in front of all the goaltenders were a hot garbage mess. He has the skills, abilities and mindset to be a starting NHL goalie, but how far he goes isn't known. Drafting another goaltender doesn't mean Hart lost his job, just means they got REALLY strong prospect depth at goalie now, which can be used as trade bait later to get a need or insurance. |

Exactly. But why? According to Bill, he would be a putrid #1D, average 2LD. According to you, they see Giardano as captain and there to stay.
Giardano will play 2LD while JO plays 1LD? Hard to imagine. The other way around means they are suddenly putting out $ for a "fundamental building block" at their 2nd pairing while 1C, goalie, 1st pairing D and everything else is below market talent/$?
The thing to me reeks of Giardano not surviving the TDL 2022. |

Oh, the only thing that could mess with that is the Delta variant. They don't have to worry about turning a profit.

My guess is that Oleksiak will be 2D, #4 on the depth chart. Is that worth his cap hit? No. But they must really like what he brings to the table.
I mean, I wouldn't have drafted him, much less signed him to that deal myself. But I'm not an NHL GM either, so... |
