If Bettman stood for something other than money he would no that the NHL has no business In China for a lot of reasons. |

5.75 is a definite overpayment for Shesterkin. I am guessing sorokin is getting 3.5 to 4 million. |

Is that why? I was curious why the figure skaters were in a pool. |

Last couple of years have been fun when we finally announce a contract.. after listening to all the dopes on hockey radio, on hockey blogs and on these message boards guess at a number for our free agents.... Lou signs them for a lot less each time....
Of course I still get a few "overpaid" texts from my friends who are Rangers, Flyers, and Devils fans... .but it's still a riot. |

I particularly loved listening to Boomer Gordon trying to figure out why in the world Pelech signed for a number that low... and then lose his mind for Nurse getting that high of a number. |

I can't believe the Rangers signed Shes for that number when Hart got only $4 mill. |

Hart was pretty god awful last year but I agree with you on shesty that’s an overpayment imo. It shouldn’t have to much of an effect on a Sorokin deal though being that Sorokin has a smaller body of work. |

That's their job. Criticize every contract as too much or not enough money or too much or too little term. Wouldn't be much for those guys to talk about if they agreed with most signings. "Good dollar amount and good term for player X. Let's see, what else can we fill 3 hours with." They have to fill air space with something. Might as well be complaining. |

He had a lot of good points.. would you ever think in a milion years that Nurse was a better player than Pelech... certainly not to the tune of 3 mill more a year better. |

I mean... I get that Makar is a much better Offensive D-man and while I think if he is an RFA you could have certainly tried to use that to get a better deal than what he got... I get it.. locked him up long term and more than likely with the cap going up with TV contracts and Covid (God willing) being over and done.. it may look like a steal in 3 years.
How can they give Nurse that much though?
I even get Seth Jones who while I am in the minority on this.. I think he is one of the best D-men in league and has had a ton of sucess in the playoffs playing almost 1/2 the game at times. He got a fortune too... but that would have been a UFA deal too.
But Nurse is not in their league. |

I agree that Nurse got overpaid. Maybe Edmonton had to overpay to keep him. Don't know. And I don't think he's better than Pelech. |

Because he was due to be a UFA next season. What’s more, despite all the poop he takes, Nurse IS a top pairing defender. He’s also the best Oiler defender BY FAR, and losing him for nothing in FA would have been a crippling blow to their blue line.
However, I do not deny that he’s significantly overpaid. But that’s not on the player. That’s the fault of a series of inept GMs who continuously bridged Nurse right up to UFA status. Their lack of foresight left them no choice but to give him whatever he asked. And after being Richarded around for this long, I can’t blame Nurse for asking (and getting) whatever the (frank) he wanted. |

Nurse is a blend of Pelech and Pulock. Not as defensively gifted as the former, but on par (or better) offensively than the latter. He’s also physical as (frank) and takes no poop. Great at nothing, but good at everything. |

It's a lot like why Columbus had to retain Werenski with that nonsense deal. He's a really good player, but now will be grossly overpaid. They simply could not afford to have their fanbase see two of their top defensemen leave within a year of each other.
Edmonton was, more or less, in exactly the same boat. Holland couldn't sit back and let Larsson and Nurse walk as UFA's. Yes, Nurse is a very, very good player and yes he's definitely overpaid now. |
