It's a small concern for now. Putting teams on notice 'we'd better have a winner built in 3-4 years' is a pretty arrogant move by a player...but also he and his agent are probably frustrated a deal isn't done and want to get things going. A bargaining tactic basically for the media to overblow...which they did lol - LordHumungous
I doubt they are frustrated a deal isnt done yet. Its to be expected. Im sure its not his agents first kick at the can.... plus, to help this team win... Petey needs to help the team's cap like the Canuck's captain did(like a real leader)... Petey's comment could also be used to argue a better deal for management.

I wouldn't rag on him if he wasn't a defenseman or if they came out and said he's a 3rd winger (just like Burns from SJ a few years ago) where he has no defensive responsibilities and just moves the puck up the ice. If you want to be paid like a Doughty or Karlsson or Hedman you darn well better be able to do everything like them which includes playing shutdown D against the best lines in hockey.
The fact that people are pointing to his offense as the best reason why he should be making 8+ mil and using comparables like Heiskenen and Makar (one of whom played in the SCF 2 years ago and won the Norris this year and one who beat QH for the Calder and was a Norris finalist) is laughable. If people want a Paul Coffey (which is who QH most resembles in playstyle/skillset) that's fine, but Coffey wasn't the guy they had on the ice in the last 2 minutes of a close game and needing to hold on to win and that's not your 1D in that case. - DariusKnight
Carol made those comparisons. He's obviously not there yet. I think they got a bridge agreed too with QH. They're trying long with Petey and maybe why the extra winning comment by him. |

Book mark it so you downers get a lesson. No one's walking if getting paid and team winning. - NuckUp
Oh… so nobody walks if they are getting paid.
Care to explain your MTA suggestion then? |

I'm not saying he shouldn't get paid, but to get 1D type money, you should be the guy that's leaned on in the last 5 minutes of a close game to bring it home. That's not QH and he's never probably going to be THAT guy and that's ok. You can get by with D by committee if you have a solid D-core that can spread the minutes out and not get too exposed. The Pens, Caps, Bruins and Blues all did it without a Norris candidate d-man.
Petey on the other hand, I'd rather they overpay a little since elite/franchise centers are really hard to come by and if the team ever does want a chance to win a Cup while he's here, they need him happy and under contract for as long as possible.

Correct on both points.
The biggest and most important contracts take time to hammer out. Boeser being a perfect example.
I said the same thing about EPs contract demands. You want to be on a winner then show how much by negotiating a fare deal for both sides. |

He was on for 1 goal against the whole men's world tournament before we was even drafted. People don't stop to think that maybe, just maybe, it has something to do with being one of the worst defensive teams for the last 10 years might have something to do with it. Not only have the canucks have had bad defenseman, but their structure has been on par with being as bad. Hughes will be just fine. This fanbase turns on their players faster than any other. - Codes1087
Or, some have seen him, well before he was drafted and could see that he is a PP specialist and not much more than that.
If you consider my opinion as turning on a player, then you are sadly mistaken, I have never wanted the kid, well before he was drafted, nor do I want him now.
If that is turning on a player, then I really don't know what to say., other than...

Hughes is Paul Coffey but without Huddy in Edmonton or Murphy in Pittsburg that were good enough to cover the entire defensive zone for him so that he could rove up the ice and play 3rd wing to Wayne, Kurri and Anderson or Mario, Jagr and Stevens in Pittsburg. I'd have no problems with QH roving if they committed to it by being upfront about it and actually drafting/developing/trading for someone like a younger version of Boychuk or Leddy that could cover for him in the D-Zone. Hamonic is not that guy, Poolman is not that guy and Myers is DEFINITELY not that guy. |

I have done enough bashing of the "shiny one", I will back off , only because I am bored of talking about a player I don't like, now if someone wants my opinion on Podkolzin, I am all for some discussion on a player who I believe is going to be very impressive..
👍
Or how about the fight in the dressing room, from last season?
If you don't like that topic, how about joining the political discussion in the forums. |
