Carol Schram: Pettersson and Hughes aren't the only young RFAs waiting for new contracts Young stars like Miro Heiskanen and Cale Makar made headlines earlier this summer when they signed big-money second contracts. But most of this year's crop of young RFAs are still waiting to put pen to paper on new deals, just like Quinn Hughes and Elias Pettersson.

Thank you Carol!!

16.6 mil left for Petey and Hughes? Minor.

8.6 mil - Petey
8.0 mil Hughes.

Problem solved.

Thanks Carol.

Big mistake Lordy paying Hughes 8 mil.

I am sure they will figure things out and next we wait and see who made the team and what moves are made.

Totally agree. I’m not as down on Hughes as Ruby is but I’m not sold yet. I need to see more than just potential. He’s going to be a target much like Tanev became a forechecking target. If caught he’s going to get hammered and that will have an effect on his playing longevity.

I think Petey might reject the NTC offer

Much rather pay him later when you find out what type of player he is. Just like when the AVs thought Barrie was an 8 mil a year player. He ended up nowhere near that.

Oh I don't know about that Barrie was on pace for well over 60 points last year if it was an 82 game sched. 6 Mil is way too low for what Hughes is gonna do IMO but we'll see where Benning takes it.

Exactly my point Hughes and Barrie are very similar. Barrie had more goals and points than Hughes last year and he received a new contract for 3 years @ 4.5 .

I don’t think it’s Benning’s call. Like most high level talent, it’s between Hughes, his agent, and FA. Benning will negotiate the best to his ability but if Hughes and his agent are firm on their price then JB will bring it to the owner for approval or rejection. If rejected Hughes sits until he or the Canucks cave. These contract demands are getting out of control… again.

I said this in the last blog, EP is the one they want signed long-term at this point, and like I said also, it's probably going to be a MacKinnon-like deal where he takes slightly less in order to surround himself with enough talent to win. I figure he takes between 7.5-8 mil for 8 years. QH on the other hand, I think they give him a 2 or 3 year deal at around 6-6.5 mil and then if he improves significantly to being a true #1, then they give him the 8+ mil long term deal. If not they can always move on from him and try and find someone else who can do the job.

I find QH to be a lot less valuable and a lot less of a so-called 'core' piece than EP. You can get by without a Norris calibre 1D, but without a franchise or at least elite-calibre center, you aren't going anywhere.

I find it funny that guys say they want to win and then turn around and demand a contract that really puts a strain on the franchise’s ability to build a competitive team. Not saying that’s what’s happening with EP but it’s strange that a contract has not been worked out yet for such an important core piece.

I think in today's NHL you need both.

And this is where lies the problem . He is not a number 1 D . I don't want to rag on the kid but he is not a player that can carry the D, and in fact he needs to be carried.

So trade him to Jersey for Ty Smith. Jersey unites the Hughses, and you get a cost controlled D on his ELC for 2 more years.

Hi started to look into Ty Smith and found this article.

Interesting comments and questions that can also be applied to Hughes. Predicting the future sucks.

As important they are to our team, the team must come first.
