Not really weird - even if Hockey is not as popular in the US, EA Sports is in the business of making money - having a US born player on the cover is probably calculated to be more profitable than puting a Canadian on the cover. Ten times the population and more potential game sales.

It does, if you consider that MacKinnon is probably a better overall player to this point and Matthews has been on the cover twice. McDavid is certainly a better player and Matthews is on twice to only once for McDavid.

Edit : it probably also doesn't hurt that Matthews plays for the Leafs. Significant fan base and hence potential sales.
