Like I said earlier why on earth would Carolina OS KK, overpay him, give up draft picks and then trade him at the TD? Are you Assuming they’re out of a playoff spot??

Also, a fact no one seems to be addressing is you cannot trade a OS player for a full calendar year - so there’s that…..

- Brooks_Light

I listened to Freidman last night .

Apparently the plan might be offer KK a number Habs could not match . Sign him and extend him for less. He feels their is a deal in place long term at reasonable cost.

Mtl wanted to sign him at 2.5 and he said no.

i think he could very well be a good 2C. I think he will get a chance to play with some very good forwards in Carolina and do well.

Remember, Miller was a 4th liner and healthy scratch multiple times in his first 2 or 3 years with NYR. It wasn't until his 4th year with NYR that he started to blossom into his potential. Got traded to TB and was solid top 6 and 1st unit powerplay guy, and now hes a 1st liner with us.

I think Kotkaniemi could do something similar in Carolina. Hes still only 21.

I dont mind eating crow if I am wrong, but I think this is a great gamble for Carolina and a low cost. I dont think hes better than petey or anything, but I don't think KK at 6.1 for next year and the year after as a 2C is an overpayment.

I don't think it's a low cost gamble at 6.1mil and a 1st and 3rd rounder. That's steep on any team.

A buddy of mine is one of his business managers, he's in LA lot's, he loves it there.

Sure pal. Must be true if a guy named after a scrotum is saying it on the internet.

Yeah I haven’t come across one person (other than Codes) that thinks kK is justified at 6.1mil - it’s absolutely insane IMO. Again, I think Comtois, Jost, Chytil are accurate comparables of what he’s actually worth.

However, I love that it’s happening - certainly gives the dog days of august some bark.

Totally agree. The Canes have the space and seem to be enjoying themselves. But that doesn't diminish the risk or cost in my opinion. If they have a side deal on a reasonable extension as suggested, then yet another slap is coming to Bergy.

To be fair, I said 5-6 given where he will be playing in the lineup both in Montreal and Carolina as he will be a 2C no matter where he goes. I also think his production next year will match his 6.1 aav. Will gladly eat crow if I'm wrong though.

Apparently they tried to trade for him, and Montreal wasn't having it. So they said (frank) you and offered him more than he's worth. If they have a longer term or bridge contract in place with him at like 4 mil, that's a pretty savvy move. One year of 6 mil when they have the space isn't a big issue.

The
@Canes
have certainly spiced things up. In early July, some close to Kotkaniemi predicted he had played his last game with the Canadiens following a healthy scratch in the Stanley Cup final. Trade seemed more likely, but Carolina has taken a far more entertaining approach.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have read from a few sources Mtl will use some picks to try and trade with Yotes and get Dvorak . They will be using a salary dump also maybe Drouin an some picks

I doubt the Yotes bite on Drouin unless there's retention. He's all salary for the next 2 years. 5.5mil hit, 11mil still to be payed.

They would need to definitely have to make it worth the Coyotes time. Otherwise Mtl are over the cap.

Mtl are sort of hooped now . They are paying off their Visa debt with Master Card.

I think they were banking on shedding some of Price's salary at the expansion draft. Not a great strategy as it turned out. They are looking pretty vulnerable for next year as well.

Petterson is also a year older.

Not a huge difference but enough to probably skew the career numbers in his favour so early on.

Yup . Never a dull moment in Bergevin's world. This is great for the league IMO although some might think of it as an embarrassment.

This is also why you need to be careful with Petey and Hughes contracts. If you over pay them you wont be able to afford all of Horvat Petey Brock JTM and Hughes. You can't have the five of them all sitting over 7.5 mil.

Yeah $6.1 is nuts but also is just being used like a signing bonus as I understand it.

Basically just "(frank) you" money from Dundon. There's another extension already worked out for a lot less.

Honestly, I think he’s behind Aho, Staal & Trochek so he could end up being a 4C, at best a 3C, which is exactly where he should be. Hell, even Bergeron said that now that Danault is gone KK would be thrust into a 2C job this upcoming year and he didn’t sound confident about that at all. Can’t wait to see how it plays out.

This offer sheet to Jesperi Kotkaniemi is an idea of the
@Canes owner Tom Dundon and not Don Waddell (GM), I’m told after speaking to sources. That being said I don’t think it’s a surprise to anyone.
