That's the play now. They can do QH at $7.5M if Petey takes no more then $8.5M. There's your 8 year deals.
- NuckUp

you won't get either of those guys at that $ for 8 years. 5 years? maybe, probably.

Or if you sign him shorter for less, you find out he's Paul Coffey-lite but is more detriment to team defense and therefore should be moved on from. A shorter, cheaper deal is easier to trade than a long term expensive deal, especially for a D-man (see OEL)
- DariusKnight

What if you find out he is Tyson Barrie lite and signed him to 8 years at 7.5.

I will be honest he is closer IMO to a Barrie than a Coffey

Here's the flaws in this take. Whatever the star comparison they always get paid. OEL had a NTC so see Kesler in hard to move.

Sorry you've been awfully wrong about everything. This is what the Canucks are pushing. If they don't get it then much less for bridge is the fallback.

5yr is neither bridge or long term and only a Dumbass GM would do that on their top talents first RFA deal.

I think you win more games with Hughes in your lineup than you do if he's gone. If the other 5 guys on the team weren't absolute garbage it wouldn't even be an issue.
- 1970vintage

But that's the issue, you need to surround him with better players and if you're going to pay him the 9+ x 8yrs that a 1D (assumed to be) tend to get in RFA, that's never going to happen. Unless you want to saddle him with a complete anchor that does nothing but stays back in the defensive zone and plays as a second goaltender, you're stuck with what you got right now. The names on the jerseys may change, but the skill level is going to probably the same or even worse paying him that much.

I was happy when he slid down to us, but offense wins meaningless regular season games and loses in the playoffs, and he's just not an all-around 1D which is what you need to be a championship team. If the team moves on from him or pays him Myers money and looks to eventually replace him in 3-5 years I'm fine with him.

I guess my problem is I can't picture Hughes as an 8 million dollar player. I have trouble picturing him as a 6 mil player.

I really hope they just sign a bridge deal and see what they really have. That was the whole purpose of the NHL introducing the bridge deal so that GMs would stop making the same mistakes over and over.

- VANTEL

Hughes might go bridge so Petey can get paid. But at the same time people need to understand that Hughes is gonna get paid. Norris trophy Dmen normally do lol

I miss that atmosphere. Except for the brutally sharp turns at Hastings Park, I always enjoyed the big races.
Edit: also the greasy hamburgers with caramelized onions.

- Shuswap Wap

Absolutely. Watching the thoroughbreds run live is such a great experience. Ironically enough growing up in Van never made it down to Hastings Park...heard it's kind of a dump now lol

Watched a lot at Stampede park with Dad years back and yeah man the greasy Stadium burgers were soooo good.

Norris trophy D-men tend to be able to play DEFENSE as good as their offense though. That's never going to be Hughes and even Burns in his Norris year could defend good even though he was used as a 3rd winger on a lot of games. He's going to be paid, I just don't think he's the right fit for this team when we don't have someone capable of being that all-around minutes eating D-man.

Hughes isn't the player I see any HC putting out there on the ice with like 2 minutes left every shift in a tight one goal game to preserve the win. That doesn't strike me as a Norris calibre D-man and therefore shouldn't be paid as one, not yet. It's why I'd be fine with moving on with him at this point (provided you can get equivalent value back which may well be impossible) or else getting him on a 1-2 year show me deal and kick this problem when it's time to re-up Bo, Miller and Boeser and you know if the team is ready to take that next step or whether JB/TG et. al are gone and a new team needs to be built.

The technology shown at this women's IIHF tournament is pretty wild . The virtual reality goalie to the hologram interviews during the intermission is pretty cool.

Japan just scored first ever goal on USA 2-1 USA

I deleted all the round robin games and the first game I watched was the Russia Swiss quarterfinal, I hope I didn't delete a lot of good hockey.

First of all, I’m not advocating to pay him $72+m over 8 years. I’ve just said that to buy those years will be costly, that’s what guys are getting paid.

Secondly, that the team has been unable to graduate even a single other full time D through the draft is deplorable.

Jim has created this mess himself. The salary structure he’s set for this team is his own doing. You think Hughes should earn less than $6m (Myers), or $8.25m (OEL)? He’s better than both those guys already - at both ends of the ice.

I haven't watched a lot of it but what I have seen has been good. Japan are now getting their asses kicked but besides that has been good. Swiss game was a bit of a surprise.

Petey will get paid nor or later I’m cool with it.

One of OJ or Bones will be playing or splitting duties or play as depth when injuries.

Strange to call it a mess. What mess?

Salary structure looks fine.

Hughes isn’t worth 8.25m yet.
