We don't know the Habs have zero depth at center?

Seems a little obvious to me.

$6 million is far too much for a 3rd liner. Fortunately for the Canes the deal is only for 1 year. Hopefully Bergevin doesn't match. The picks may help with the rebuild.

They will have to pay the same next season if they want to keep him

It is almost like someone said... hey, the draft is in Montreal, let's see if we can get the #1 pick.

Then everything will be forgiven.

If he doesn’t trade for a centre now, then he should GTFO

You blame KK and Danault for leaving on Bergevin with no infos. It's easy, it's cheap but it's what you do

he sounded bitter at the end of the season, to be honest

two first rounders would be a good start to get some help

otherwise, do they go with Evans as the 2nd C?

- deadpoulet

I don’t think so… there’s not much left in the UFA pool! Galchenuyk!? Do you take a chance with another offer sheet? Even with the remaining RFA’s there is not much. Batherson?

The Canes don’t even have the cap space for this. I’m not sure they thought this through! I know you can always trade players or send them down but this seems to be a stupid move.

1) I do not blame them for leaving, players should take the money and run. good on them.

2) I blame MB for not signing them, and if he could not get that done, filling in those losses with other players. We were already down a top 9 center, now we are down 2 of them.

It sounds like a move they made with emotions, not using their heads in here. That could end up ugly real fast.

the way I see it, Danault left because Habs wanted to go with the kids, especially on the PP. fine. no problem. but then sign kk!!
if you're not satisfied with kk, why let Danault walk?
that's where I agree with him. no plan.

Are the habs in a rebuild tho? They are spending a lot of money on free agents the last few years so I don’t think you can say that. They will get a pick in the 23-32 range and a 3rd round pick which is a dart throw if they don’t match. Not saying kk is worth 6 million, but if he’s gone they have garbage at centre after Suzuki.

but what if they don't want to sign? he cannot force them. he could have traded kk though. that he could have done. but would he have brought back more than 1st and a 3rd?

thing he's always female doging and sounds like a broken record. They just went to the stanley cup final.

I guess it's far from a great off season, but some people were female doging when the team was winnning games 6-1 in october.

Read the rest of the (frank)ing line.

I said if he could not sign them, then he should have found replacements.

Habs have known for over a year that Danault was gone. So that was not a shock.. they went out and got scrubs to replace him. Hardly worthy replacements.

Given KK was not signed so far into the summer, I suspect (yes, without proof) that the Habs did not think anyone would make an offer $6M for 1 year. Perhaps they thought he might get a multi-year offer sheet in the 4-5 million range, which they might (or might not have) have matched. Either way, they had to know there was a high probability KK might not come back, especially given Carolina was actively trying to trade for KK.

Even if all of this is pure bullpoop speculation, bottom line - Habs lost 2 assets and did not replace them with equally valuable assets.

That is 100% on MB.

Carolina does Montreal a huge favor. Super easy pass on matching, and MB has the week to trade for replacement, knowing he has those picks coming. If no trade, Poehling moves up for certain, and the two new centers all battle it out for two spots.

But I guess you hope he develops into a decent centre tho. Drafting a guy at 25 is probably a major step back if you are looking at the potential in my opinion.
