Oh I 100% agree their team is terrible without a KK replacement, but with or without him they're a very fringe playoff team at best and defintiely worse than last year without Danault and Weber. I don't think they're near good enough to compete for the cup unless some other big trade is coming. I'm fine for a retool/rebuild if no sensible options are available. Keeping KK is chasing sunken costs imo.

well, if you want to look at the silver lining you could consider that they made the playoffs last year despite Weber's terrible play, he wasn't helping the team very much during the regular season, and then finally found his groove in the playoffs.

Even if they make it though they won't have playoff Weber. Even if Weber was noticeably regressing, can Savard match what Weber was doing? I'd say no, but I'll admit I haven't seen a ton of his play.

Ducharme already mentioned it will need to be an effort by committee on the back end, looking at Savard as Weber's replacement would be missing the point, and a setup for unavoidable disappointment lol

I'm not entirely sure what you're saying tbh, but keeping KK at 6.1 (frank)s everything. See what happened with Toronto and Nylander and the snowball effect that had. Yes I wanted to see what KK could do, but I dont think they should pay north of 6 million a year for the foreseeable future to do it. Bergevin made a bad offer sheet to Aho, these are the consequences, but c'est la vie.

I think Ducharme is in for disappointment if he expects more effort by committee to amount to a Weber replacement who was still a serviceable top 4. Unless Romanov takes a miracle leap forward, he's the only one who has room to grow. Petry, Edmunson, and Chiarot sure as hell won't improve in their 30s.

You say you are fine with a rebuild or retoll and then at the same time, do not mention KK age when it comes to what he did on the ice so far.

If you want to do a rebuild, why not start with a dude who is 21 years old?

"regular season Weber" shouldn't be too hard to replace, it's the "playoff mode Weber" that is more of a concern, as you were previously hinting to. I'm not expecting any miracles but I do hope Romanov takes another step, they'll badly need it if MB doesn't add anyone on the d core.

Mostly because he is/will be tremendously overpaid and even paying that ridiculous cost there will be no guarantee he pans out. We're also getting paid a 1rst and 3rd to absolve ourselves of this risk. Yes you can say that about everybody in terms of will they pan out, but how much will Suzuki and CC be making if KK is getting 6 million plus having proven only how inconsistent he is and putting up pitiful point totals? Getting paid 6 million having proven jack poop sends the wrong message. By the it comes to compete we'll be like Toronto. Everybody overpaid and no room to balance the roster.

I don't think he deserves that money either, but I don't know what will happen next if KK leaves either.
A full rebuild would take time, even more so if you let him go.

Maybe people will be happy next season with 2 (or more?) first round picks in mtl, but there's a full season before.
