Hains: Should He Stay or Should He Go?
What a difference a few days can do, just this week, I said that I still had confidence in Marc Bergevin, but now, things have changed…
They will use the two first rounders to acquire an elite C.
Everyone’s know next year draft is one of the best in last decade. Buffalo might have a look at this
Everything about KK is based off of future 'potential'......and for me KK never lives up to the 3rd overall pick expectations, so it is an easy decision. Take the picks, hope Carolina falls on their face this next season, making that 1st very special.

People say Carolina are idiots for paying KK $6.1 million.
I think it is a brilliant move on their part.
Habs lose either way, while Carolina likely wins either way - they get the player they wanted to trade for a (late round) 1st and a 3rd and nothing prevents Carolina from signing KK to an extension such as 3 years at 3-4.5 million a few months from now, to really have the contract make sense overall (as has been suggested will likely happen by a number of media folks).
Also, there was this nugget of information from Dreger this morning:
The @Canes have certainly spiced things up. In early July, some close to Kotkaniemi predicted he had played his last game with the Canadiens following a healthy scratch in the Stanley Cup final. Trade seemed more likely, but Carolina has taken a far more entertaining approach.
So it seems MTL knew KK was unhappy, likely did not want to stay unless something changed, and that Carolina was interested in trading for him.
What did MTL do? Nothing about it.
Well, that just blew up in MB's face.
If Carolina can afford that cap hit this year, more power to them going forward. Not only do they get the player they wanted, they get revenge in a way MB cannot possibly come out a winner.
Another wasted #3 pick by the Habs, throw Sergachev on top of that, and you have to wonder how MB still has a job.

They won’t match it.

They've been trying to trade for a C for how many years now?
20? 30?
And magically that will happen in the next 7 days?
Did u watch the Queen’s Gambit on Netflix? It was pretty good. - Karine Hains
no but I might. But I don't watch a lot of series lately because when it's good, it's time consuming. I would rather watch a movie or maybe a short mini docu series or something.
ostie quand je me suis retapé X files au complet. C'est bon mais il y avait 9 saisons, genre. Et plus maintenant.

Actually two. Habs still has their, a bunch of picks and a bunch of good prospect.
Still think they can do it. Specially at Eichel - MONSTERSofMETALZ
Habs could have traded their next 5 first round picks if they wanted to get a center.
a later 1st round pick really does not change much.
Eichel is broken and likely will not be the same player going forward - so the Habs will super overpay for him or just plain overpay for a mediocre center in a panic move.
This smells like the Gomez off-season all over again....

Andrew Zadarnowski on Twitter: Habs will match no doubt
Grant McCagg is optimistic: Montreal will match the Kotkaniemi offer sheet. I'm not sure that's even debatable. He'll have a productive season and next summer he'll sign a long-term contract in the $6-8M range.
