I don't think he deserves that money either, but I don't know what will happen next if KK leaves either.
A full rebuild would take time, even more so if you let him go.
Maybe people will be happy next season with 2 (or more?) first round picks in mtl, but there's a full season before. - deadpoulet
The whole situation sucks, no getting around that. That Aho offer poop was idiotic, but here we are. I think letting him walk is right course of action considering his cost and the high end centers usually show something by their 3rd season ie around 20 goals. I could very well be wrong though, and keeping him could be the right course of action. No way to be sure, but I think letting him go is the best choice with what we've seen up to now. |

This move will destroy KK. He is not worth $6 million with $20M signing bonus. If he goes to CAR and scores 10 goals do they pay him $6M again? Nope. Trying to destroy a young mans carreer in the name of childish revenge is despicable. Welcome to Galenchuk #2 thanks to a childish move by a bush league team that couldn’t keep their top defenseman, Hamilton. Hello Buffalo #1A. |

He's not getting a $20M singing bonus. It's $20. Just 20, no million.
The talk is that Carolina will likely sign him to an extension at a much more reasonable number (hearing 5 years at $4.2 per) which will essentially be a 6-year deal with an AAV of $4.5M. |

Yes, but this is $20 of real money. Carolina isn't in Canada. |

2 schools of thought:
superficially... you invested a 3rd overall pick and 3 years of development into this guy. you don't throw all that away because Tom Dundon is seeing a poopty therapist. if you think he's going to develop into a strong 2-way 50-60 point pivot, you bite this bullet.
but also, this is a 21-year-old whose development has not exactly gone smoothly over the first 3 years. he's invisible and wholly ineffective for weeks at a time. and as much as everyone wants to blame Julien/Ducharme for that, Suzuki and Caufield have done just fine in the same environment. that KK would willingly participate in what was obviously going to be a very public humiliation for the franchise, you can't help but think that the relationship between player and team is very broken. and that is sure to play a factor in the decision if it's the case. |

I agree with what you said, except the bolded.
Reports had the Habs offering the young man 1.5M per season for 2 years.
Than Carolina shows up with a 6.1M offer for one year.
Only a fool wouldn't sign it.

Both are not mutually exclusive. Kotkaniemi could have wanted to get paid and show up the team publicly that benched him in the Cup Finals |
