So was the Weber offer sheet. - AdamFrench
Also...with Aho...hard to include the pandemic in the calculation unless MB is illuminati and all that.
Weber offer sheet shouldn't have been matched I've argued many times. Four 1sts is more than all but a few are worth |

Is it in the rules? Sure. There are unwritten rules in all manners of life and it's known offer sheets are playing with fire. When MB played with fire Carolina got a great deal and Montreal is getting burned...hard to argue it any other way - Takemedrunkimhome
difference is, MB's offersheet to Aho kinda made sense, where as Waddell's offer is rather questionable at this point in KK's career... that 20$ thing has "butt hurt" written all over it lol |

Oh it's a very petty move by Waddel and Carolina.
But it's a more "efficient" offersheet because, unlike Aho, the team might actually not match it while there was little to no doubt about what Carolina would do.

I guess it depends how you define efficiency from the Canes' perspective. if they're expecting MB to match and they just want to (frank) around with the habs' salary cap, but then realize that he isn't actually matching, that may have been too "efficient" lol |

Dundon's offer sheet (not Waddell) is a giant (frank) you. (frank) you for trying to mess with my franchise C. (frank) you for trying to mess with my franchise. (frank) you for your public comments trying to embarrass me and my franchise. Is it a smart way to run a franchise? Of course not. It's utter malpractice. End of the day the Canes are his toy and if he wants to break it in order to spite another kid in the sandbox it's his choice. This situation and the embarrassment that comes with it is all on MB and it was all avoidable |

bah, I kinda disagree, of course Bergevin shouldn't be surprised by the retaliation, but at the same time he isn't responsible for how other GMs and owners manage their team, and I don't consider the Aho offersheet was this incredibly insulting move that required a vengeful answer.
also, is it the owner that sends out the offersheet (Dundon), and not the GM..? |

People said right after the playoffs that Kotkaniemi's camp was saying he'd played his last game in Mtl...months later this.
This whole situation is on MB. Dundon is running his franchise like a petulant child but MB deserves everything he's getting, not the least of which was a word for word statement about Kotkaniemi that matched MB on Aho. MB deserves this embarrassment and there isn't a good solution to it. Every solution sucks. MB deserves everything he's getting here - Takemedrunkimhome

AND if it's true that all MTL offered was $3 million over 2 years then what can you say? they don't like the kid. - DoubleDown
I do think MB was playing the Markov / Radulov take-it-or-leave it approach, as he figured KK had no options as an RFA. Also, MB should have likely been aware that KK was unhappy in MTL and probably would rather have moved on.
Whether true or not, MB shoudl have been looking at options a while ago. But he sat on this contract offer and lost a player for a late round 1st and a 3rd.
Habs are once again back to having zero center depth, with replacements of Perrault and Paquette (probably both scratches on most teams) not viable at this point.
Good luck finding 2 viable centers before the start of the season.

Again, I don't think it was the offer sheet, per se, but the comments MB made afterwards, saying Carolina was vulnerable because they did not have the money / will to spend money to pay that first year (with the bonus). So I can see how Dundon viewed this as a taunt and a jab at his organization.
If MB had just kept his mouth shut, this probably does not happen.
Do I think Dundon is right in responding? I dunno, but it sure made the dog days of hockey summer more interesting. |

Waddell did the OS but both he and Dundon reacted to the Aho offer sheet as though Bergevin creampied both their wives |

oh right, forgot about the "being vulnerable" comment lol... still, KK's offersheet is an overreaction, and the Canes definitely have their fair share of responsibility for the current situation, it doesn't rest all on Bergevin's shoulders imho.
