I'm pretty high on Monahan even if he had a down year I'd happily do something like Guhle, our first, Poehling and Drouin for him. Doubt that gets it done though, but Calgary seems down on him. We'd have a good team imo with him in and KK out. Could still use an upgrade on defense, but we'd definitely be in the playoff conversation.

yeah I don't think trading away Guhle would help at all in respect to upgrading the defense core

I love this play by Carolina. Let’s all be real for a second there’s obviously revenge in this deal no one will argue that because offer sheets have become a taboo to GMs. But even with that let’s talk about the deal as is starting with Carolina trying to trade for him. If the amount Montreal wanted exceeded the value of a 1st and 3rd and they were unwilling to come below that asking price it’s an absolute no brainier to use this offer sheet and entirely Bergies fault for not reading between the lines. Next let’s talk about the price 6.1 it’s right below what a 1st, 2nd, 3rd would have been in compensation. It creates massive cap problems in Montreal even with LTIR in effect and it’s entirely unreasonable of a cost for what KK has shown he can do it at the nhl level. That last point is incredibly important because when’s the last time an RFA signed to a reasonable AAV wasn’t matched? The number forces the possibility of not matching in multiple ways. To even have a chance of Carolina getting KK which based on all reports they’re very interested in, it had to be a large over pay. Could the QO bite them, sure but it’s not like they’re forced to sign a QO, can’t sign an extension at a lower amount, and can’t take him to arbitration at a lower amount if need be. Just as much as it bites Carolina it bites Montreal worse with Suzuki coming up next year. Last but not least I’ll bring the Aho deal which by all accounts was fine in AAV terms, but bought zero UFA years and ends when he becomes a UFA. Does anyone really think Carolina didn’t want to buy some UFA years on a longer term deal for Aho like they just did with svech? Sure Dundon has shown he’s cheap compared to the rest of the league when paying non player staff but every team the Canes have iced since he took over ownership has been up against the cap a fact that somehow always gets overlooked. The teams they’ve iced the past few years shows he’s willing to spend on players anyone thinking the signing bonuses in Aho’s deal was the trap is entirely wrong it’s the fact he becomes a UFA without any extra UFA years bought being the vicious move. So yeah revenge is there but everything about the KK deal was done to prevent Montreal from matching from what I can tell and it’s not like anyone can blame KK for signing a deal at about 2.5x his worth.

I still don't understand their goalie moves, sending the kid to DET for a pick. puzzling.

yeah a lot of people seemed to think it was basically an insult when MB offersheeted Aho, while I felt like it wasn't such a big deal. but ultimately, judging by Waddell's answer (with the little 20$ hint lol) it's become obvious he definitely had a grudge.
- Pat1993

I don't think it was the offer sheet, but the comments MB said about the offer.

looks like he played 5 games last season, so hopefully he plays more than that next season. No idea where the best place for him would be. He's 19.

No, the offer with the signing bonus and MB implying the structured it that way because Carolina were in a vulnerable position (ie: they did not have the money to spend or want to spend the money).

the way I see it is since the majority of the habs' prospects are with the Rocket then he might as well be there, having young talented players on the same team surely helps with the development process and in building a healthy level of competitiveness. then again, what the (frank) do I know lol

I think the Habs will miss Joel Bouchard, he had a positive impact on player development... something the Habs really missed in the previous 20+ years.

I agree it sucks that he left, I also really liked the guy and what he was doing with the kids, but I doubt they'll regress to what was going on under Sylvain Lefebvre... and perhaps Jean-François Houle was a solid choice, I'll give him a chance to see what he can do before assessing anything.
