Ottawa needs a centre and a top 4 Dman if they are going to hang around beyond Christmas in search of a playoff spot. I don't think they will make it. But I would love to see them stay close.

From good news to bad news…..Brannstrom is sent down? Del Zotto is going to be a train wreck.
- CooCooKaChoo

branny had to be sent down....he's the only player (who wasn't in the lineup tonight) who could be sent down without waivers to make room for the Tkachuk contract.

besides, better for him to be playing top pair in the AHL than to be sitting in the press box in Ottawa

The fact that so many leafs and habs fans are whining about how much of an overpayment it is means it's a perfect f-ing deal.....and they're just pissed that they'll be facing him for 7 more years.
- sensarmy_11

My gawd this is such a dumb take.
No habs or leafs fans are "whining" about anything man.
Shocked that its such an overpayment for someone who has never hit 50pts in a season is more like it. Sure last year he was on pace for 52 and he provides some grit, but still.
But you've got cap to burn, so good for sens fans, you actually kept a quality player.
Its a good day, overpayment or not.
Congrats.

Great to see Tkachuk signed long term!!! That will help when it comes time to re-sign Norris, Stutzle, Pinto and others.

In 3-4 years time the NHL salary cap should ratchet up quite considerably. The US TV contracts are much higher than prior deals, there will be gambling and NHL jersey ad revenues, plus inflation seems to be higher going forward. With full NHL arenas I'd say we are looking at $90M+ salary cap.

I think Norris/Pinto will be just fine at center.....i think what this team needs is anohter goal scoring RW.

I love Connor Brown, but he's much better suited as a 3rd line PK guy IMO.

The D is what it is.......team needs to be patient. we have Sanderson, Thomson, JBD all waiting about to break through.....no need to make a panic move.

saying it's an overpay simply because of point totals is a dumb take.

Brady's points and goals will come, but he brings so much more than that.

Leafs hand out contracts based solely on points......how's that working out for you guys so far........guys like Marner and Nylander have been LIGHTS OUT when games have mattered most.

Sorry, hitting and annoying others isnt worth millions extra.
LOL
Willie was good this past post seasons, marner was meh and is overpaid imo as well...but he's a 90pt + player and 0.71pt a game playoff player for his career.

Hard to believe the Leafs could spend so much on soft ice dancers who score well in the compulsory figures every year but choke in the free dance competition when the medals are awarded.

I think we overpaid a bit (AVV-wise) by $500K-$1M but time will tell.
- Panzer_IVA

Try to make a list of 10 deals this off-season that weren't overpays. Great to see him sign, better to see him sign long term, and even better you likely never have to see BlueTaco post here ever again. Win-win-win for Ottawa and their fans.

you know that nylander produced at a very similar pace to tkachuk.....while being insanely soft and one-dimensional.

like i said, the leafs sign contracts based on what they feel important.....and have managed to fall flat on their face every single year for 2 decades.

so you enjoy your team, and we'll enjoy ours

Jackie, remember when I told you that you are going to look really dumb posting your foolish takes on the BT contract if the player signs long term?

Enjoy.

This is the attitude all players should have. Brady will certainly be gone within 4 years, so its best for the team and players to move on.

Unfortunately, Dorion does not share this view. I suspect Dorion will give Brady the deal he wants. Dorion has long known this impasse was unavoidable, and if the intent were to trade Brady, it would have been done in the off-season when potential suitors had available cap space. The Tkachuk's know this.

I anticipate a short term deal will be singed shortly, with a no-trade clause in place for the last year of the contract. This deal will handcuff the Sen's next GM, as Brady will hold all of the cards in his final season.

Are Leaf fans really that happy looking at their window beginning to close and never having won a playoff round since forever. Marner is as soft as Kleenex, Willie skates a mile on the perimeter every night, Tavares is never there when it matters and Matthews disappears the moment the playoffs begin.

How dare you challenge the grit and tenacity of Brady Tkachuk. How can you understand what he brings when you have never had it for yourself?

I prefer to take the length of the deal and divide the total.
Sens wanted him for 8. He wanted bonuses. If we are to believe what was leaked by the team they offered him 8x8. If we are to believe what was leaked by Team Keith...he wanted a bridge or less term. Compromises were made.....I guess. An overpay by 200-250K a year.

Interesting that in the old days, more term meant less money. Now it means more. As you're buying UFA years from the player.

I would have preferred a 3 year deal. But as a long term contract, it is a pretty result for both sides.

Folks are going to love this team. They have size, grit and huge speed.

Still wish they had more experience in middle and a top 4 Dman, but this is going to be a fun team. Doubt they make the playoffs this year. But, they will hard on the teams who are fighting to stay ahead of them.

More term in the old days meant less money because the term contracts were primarily for older established players. It's a new NHL where these term deals are being signed right out of ELC or a short bridge, so more term is more money. When Drai signed his deal, everyone said it was an overpay, now....

Darcy tucker, Wendel Clark, Gary Roberts

Been around long enough to know what that style of player is, and around long enough to see those players successful, mostly against your beloved Sens...

Team now isn't built that way, saddens me a little but teams go through cycles, watching the game last night, Nylander went into the harder areas, but the core is still young, and the window isn't closing, not yet.

Your team should continue to improve, make sens/leafs really matter again.

Amen, regarding BlueTaco. May have to adjust those meds, after spending so much time being so completely wrong about Tkachuk wanting to be in St. Louis. Though presumably he's now just 100% fixated on talking about Matthew over on the Flames' board.

You know, the funny part of Darcy Tucker was\were his offensive numbers in Junior. Compared to the role he accepted once he got to the NHL. You'd think he would have been a sniper in the NHL.

"Before making it to the NHL, the feisty forward enjoyed great success in the junior ranks with the Kamloops Blazers, winning three Memorial Cups while totaling 379 points over the course of four seasons. He was also a member of the gold medal-winning Canadian team at the 1995 World Junior Hockey Championship."

Where did you see that? Capfriendly is not showing any clauses for any years of this new contract...

EDIT: just saw it from Friedman...
