I did warn you all that's all we were gonna get.

Don't really understand how it's devil's advocate. Obama put the heavy sanctions on Russia and fostered the wars in Syria and Libya that lead to them "annexing" Crimea. Trump put even heavier sanctions and bombed the Syrian government the major ally of Russia. Biden sabre rattles with Russia about how they're the enemy of the world and that new sanctions are coming...of course they attack. They're a failed state running off of an Oligarchical hegemony of natural resources and a placated underserved public.

I hope they get stopped. If not externally, then internally so they finally realize that the best way to be stable is to get that pipeline with Germany and avoid all of this insanity trying to reclaim the Soviet breadbasket.

- AdamFrench

This I completely agree with...but it's also the only reason they aren't using the real sanction that would hurt Russia, cutting it off from the swift banking system, because Germany won't let them

there's only one option. let them have Ukraine, quick, with the less casualties possible. the question is not if they will take it but when.
then impose on them economical sanctions so strong that they will suffer for decades, like Germany in 45. cut the pipeline, the existing one, and get gas to Europe from the North Sea or even from Canada. let them sell theirs to Djina.

And what if Putin doesn't stop there? What if he goes after Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia next?

Not necessarily disagreeing but pushing Russia closer to China may not be in the west's best interests either.

Not just Russia, they'll take people out too.... they have the means, and they have China backing them up, although their economy relies on the western world quite a bit

I think both are ambitious for themselves and so they play nice but only when it is beneficial to themselves. You push a nuclear super power and the largest human capital/army in modern history into a corner together...that's not a good situation even for the winning side

I think that's a large part of the calculation as to why this is happening now. If Russia learned anything from Crimea it was that the rest of the world was stuck asking "what are you gonna do?". Either the west is willing to go to war or they aren't and if they aren't why would Russia stop? Clearly they don't give much of a (frank) about the sanctions

Germany is open to cutting Russia off the SWIFT global interbank payment system but must calculate the consequences for its economy first, Finance Minister Christian Lindner said on Friday.

Don't think Putin would care too much, he's too busy trying to get the USSR band back together

unless he attacks a country part of NATO, this will have to come from inside. when all his rich friends tell him to stop, when Ovie tells him to stop, when the F1 GP cancel their Russia stop, when the population can't take anymore misery because of the economical sanctions... maybe, maybe things will change.
they'll have Ukraine but no butter to put on their bread. and no bread either.

That's never stopped anybody before and I use a phone which makes PMs a nightmare...simply put my point is saying it would be different under Trump is rightwing radio talk from people trying to score political points. Same reason right wing media is pushing the "who even cares about Ukraine" (Trump actually called it the Ukraine - the Russian term that Ukraine rejects) and "Putin is right to do this, it's NATO's fault for pushing to Russia's borders" blah blah. There is a lot more behind everybody's opinions than truth or facts in this.

Also that invitation to join NATO was after the annexation of Crimea so the tough on Russia stuff doesn't really fly either. It was a soft ass olive branch as a reward for bad behaviour.

Obama was awful. Trump was awful, Biden has been and will continue to be awful. My opinions only

- Takemedrunkimhome

Voila ! Agreed, like everything else nowadays (on people trying to score political points, no matter how stupid or false what they are saying is)

I think the calculation was made that the west didnt care enough to go to war, unless he goes crazy and try to go to Latvia, then it would be "interesting" as Biden said he would defend every inch of Nato ( took me a few second to realise it was L'Otan)

I also think they prepared for the sanctions, so short term they mean nothing, will be interesting to see if mid-long term they start having some weight ?

Also think its a timing thing, timing was right now and yes it would have happened even if Trump was still there, anyway he really looked like Putin puppet's...

The west is weak and between the covid economies and inflation it's not hard to think there would be no appetite for war

The 3 countries I mentioned are all part of NATO.... Putin doesn't like having former USSR countries as part of NATO, Ukraine had been trying, it's why I don't believe he'll stop there.... he'll take whatever former USSR country that is aligned with NATO
