Pens didn't win the cup, but Hossa helped propel the Pens there.
I'd say more often than not, the huge trades for rentals doesn't translate to a cup visit. I think it's easier to think of the smaller moves teams have made. Tampa made a few minor deals before the first of their back to back. - Rinosaur
Hossa also propelled the Redwings one season later to the cup.... |

Signed there in the off-season. Wasn’t a tdl rental acquisition. |

The one tactic I did like about JR is making moves a month or two before the deadline. Giving players more time to acclimate to their team gives them a better shot of having a solid impact.

I think Marty St.Louis was a deadline move by the Rangers the year they went to the cup. |

It usually turns out that way.
Would you consider Jeff Carter to LA a "big fish" in 2013?
Did Guerin come to Pittsburgh in 09, or 08?
These aren't marquee HOF players, but they were keys to their team's runs. Wasn't Ron Francis a TDL acquisition for the Pens? I'd say that's a big fish. I also think Larry Murphy was a TDL for Detroit in 1997. |

Yes. That dude who got a permaban on here (forget his username) was having a fit about "The ghost of MSL's grandmother." |

I think this is more of a function of probabilities. The probability of even the best regular season team winning the Cup is so small that it's still just super unlikely that the team that has the best deadline acquisition will go on to win the Cup. I think if you expand your parameters to high end acquisitions and not just the absolute best one, you'll see more of a correlation with Cup winnings, and definitely if you expand your result to deep playoff runs. |

That dude always kept things interesting.
Also, as a side note; despite them not winning the Cup, Hossa was the best winger Crosby's ever played with. They were a joy to watch. |

Yeah that was an extremely sound TDL acquisition. We could have extended him and he just said no. If he had extended we would have 100% won a Cup with him. He didn't want to stay and it worked out great for him regardless, and we figured it out ourselves so I'm not super concerned about this What If story, but even though it didn't "pan out" that was an extremely good TDL get. |

My Avs loving buds were just letting me know they can "pull a Tampa" because Landy will be ready for playoffs...wasn't even considering that haha |

There are a ton of people saying Florida should be considered a front runner along with the Avs. Trading Vatrano today helped open up even more space. |
