I didn’t say it would “pay for itself”
But it is a FACT that a downtown stadium would generate more revenue than an OP stadium - jdfitz77

Boom anybody who ever said the sabers were for sale could go f*** themselves.
PSE just about laughed at the question. - lacaprup
Excellent... They aren't selling swords.
Now I wonder if the Sabres are for sale.

Of course it would. And you'd never come close to making it worth the initial outlay of billions of extra dollars.

I know we joke about them, but I do believe that if the Pegulas are sincere about one thing, it's that they want to keep both teams here. If word gets out that the Sabres are for sale, there will be bidders from all over the place, which might not bode well for them staying here, especially given the state that the arena is in. - buffalofan19
The bills were far and away more than a threat to move that the Sabres ever will be.
The Sabres/Buffalo are an NHL darling.
Yes not now, but if the team is good again, buffalo will be a very good market for the NHL.
Buffalo as an HL city and buffalo as an NFL city are two drastically different things. |

While true, if an owner were willing to buy the team, pay the relocation fee to move them to a market like Houston for example, I'm not sure how much the league would fight it.

There is no "return" - that's the point. You're going to spend a lot of money and not make back but a fraction of it. If you spend more money you are increasing that discrepancy exponentially.
If I go to a casino to gamble $100 I know that I am going to win some games and eventually they will give me back something like $20 in chips. I still lost $80. I could spend $500 to get back $90 in chips - that isn't a good way to get more "return". |

it makes sense that it would generate more revenue, however, would it be enough revenue to account for the additional cost to buy and build downtown? then what do you do what all that shat in OP.. |

As much as we bag on him Bettman has been our best friend here. Jim Ballsillie (sp) would have paid that money in a heartbeat.

Fair points
1- $$$ is gonna go towards infrastructure dt regardless
2- knock down the stadium in OP i guess. More parking for ECC south, or more room for ECC to expand
Plus, it would generate more private $$$ investment into development in the city as well
That’s not gonna happen around OP
And doesn’t need to |

We were going to spend billions upgrading the infrastructure of an area where there is currently no demand? Where is this plan?

Ballsillie (supposedly) wanted to move the team to Hamilton, a small market that was already covered by Toronto, and one that Toronto could potentially block anyway. If he wanted to move the team to a much bigger untapped market, such as Houston, for example, I don't think Bettman would have resisted as much.

I don't know - his words and actions made it sound like he was adamant against the team moving. I don't think its a good look for teams to be moving and that is why they kinda put a stop to that. If anyone was ever going to move it would be the Coyotes, and they haven't (yet).

Obviously there isn’t a set plan in place yet bc the Stadium location still wasn’t decided
But yeah…. That area has had some $$ being thrown into it already, with the subway expanding
And a lot more $$$ will have to be put into that area unless the plan is to just let it rot- and that seems like a bad idea imo
ALSO….
A downtown stadium wouldn’t be “Billions” more
It would be hundreds of millions more, that’s true
But if the stadium does go downtown, then we can get Federal grants that would basically cover the extra funding needed
*those federal grants are not available for an OP stadium
So yes….
Financially, a downtown stadium still makes the most sense |

Kathy Hochul dropped a huge hint at a new Sabre arena. She was asked directly about further development around the stadium in OP, and she parleyed it immediately into the Perry Projects.
Guranteed Tpegs and Hochul have a backburner agreement for a new hockey arena. |

This entire conversation is purely speculative. My original point is that if the Pegulas put up a For Sale sign on the Buffalo Sabres, it would be open season. Ron Raccuia's answer to Adam Benigni's question today about any PSE properties being for sale is nothing more than the strategy of "deny, deny, deny".

You think it will be a new one and not an upgrade?
Where do you think they stick it?
When do you think that’s announced? |

Hamilton still scares me a Sabres home destination.
0 coincidence with the heritage game
Gotta think bettman / nhl would love to have 8 Canadian teams. Currently at 7 I believe?
The pandemic woke up some geography questions.
Especially an all Canadian division if necessary |
