It's been a known rules for years, especially since the Sabres became the trade deadline specialists for 12 years running.

I think if there is one area that it might make sense is that the trade deadline is really the playoff roster deadline. In theory I guess you could protect against a team getting a boost by bringing in a rental after the TDL. I still don't agree with it, but that's the NHL.

There was talk that maybe because of the special circumstance (clearly the process is broken) that they might allow him to play if traded but that was just speculation. The people on that roster can't be feeling too good knowing that more moves are going to have to be made.
