I like Graves, but I'm not sure that's the kind of 2nd pairing defenseman the Isles need. He's basically Pelech-lite, which is great, but the Isles have a cheaper defensive-defenseman option in Mayfield. A third pairing of Graves-Mayfield would be awesome...but that seems like a luxury at the moment, given their other needs.
As A back up I would be fine with most of the guys on that list. Sorokin will be our starter and signing a guy like Halak, Greiss, Kinkaid or a younger guy they think has upside would be fine. Especially with our goalie coaches. Varly is great but he makes $5mill and was hurt for most of last year. If you can get a servicable back up for $3mil less u do it.... IF YOU NEED THE CAP SPACE.
You don't trade a 24 year old top 6 forward. - niteislander
Most of those other goalies on that list have sub-.905 sv%'s....many are below .900. Throwing a sieve out there every third game, or other game on back-to-backs, would be a poor strategy for making the playoffs. Almost every team in the league needs to have two solid goaltenders to compete these days. And if Sorokin was injured semi-long-term then we'd be completely (frank)ed.
Also, not once have I argued that they should trade Beauvillier, ever. Would I for the right player? Yes. Am I itching to trade him? No. I'm not sure why you keep beating that drum when I never even hinted at "needing" to move him.
My Son gave me a bar of that shat once. Stuff is like sandpaper! - nyisles7
It looks like it feels like that
The only thing worse is those (frank)ing Bombas socks. I get that they donate socks to homeless shelters when you buy their stuff, which is great, but if they think I'm paying $100 for 6 pairs of socks they're out of their minds.
I'd rather buy 20 pairs at Target for $40 and donate them myself

I tried the soap and it feels like sand paper when you use it as well.

Pretty sure any goalie on Detroit right now would have a sub .90% save percentage.

I mean, do you honestly want to roll the dice and find out if Griess has anything left in the tank during what's almost certainly going to be a make-or-break season for the Isles?
Greiss will turn 37 halfway through next season. I'm very not confident there will be much of a bounce-back from his Detroit numbers.

A 2 million dollar savings that ruins maybe the best tandem in the league doesn’t make sense to me. I don’t think Lou would chance it either. As you said in prior posts you would be an injury away from a solid situation between the pipes to a questionable one.
Look how the goalie injuries hurt The Pens and Canes in the PO’s this year. Again I Just don’t see Lou rolling the dice on this and honestly he can make up 2 million on a couple contracts. There’s creative ways to do that. I agree with you.

You may not agree, but I would be very-OK with buying out Matt Martin. It saves $1M this year and next, and costs us $500k the following two seasons.
It's not a huge savings, but that's approximately half of what trading Varlamov and signing someone for about $3M saves us. Having Martin and Johnston is redundant and Martin's play has been steadily declining.

How old is Varly? which one of them was healthy last year? Do you not want to get rid of a 35 year old Varly while he still has value? .. Greiss Did very well here with these coaches last time.. I would be fine with him on a 1 year deal for 1.5 ish mill as a back up. You are the one always worried about the cap.. we really can't have $10 mill tied up in Goalies..no?

That is a pretty aggressive statement.. Varly had 10 wins last year in 30 starts. He was terrible in the beginning of the year.. terrible (I know what the team was dealing with and that certainly was part of the reson.. as was him coming off injury). I don't think he won a game until almost Christmas..
If we need the money for a sign.. I am fine with moving him... while we still can get something for him and get Cap room you all love to talk about. . He had an OK season after a terrible start.

You probably don't need to buy out Martin.. u can waive him and someone will pick him up. I like him on the team.. but I would not cry about it. IF you need room there are others u can send to AHL to save $1 mill too... Bailey!! .. Cal might be on IR to start season.

I still don't understand why we re-signed a physical 4th liner that needed shoulder surgery. I think Cal is going to spend quite a bit of time on the IR this season whether he starts there or not. Shoulder surgeries for grinders usually don't end well.
I'm not as confident anyone would take Martin if he were waived. He's a 33 year old banger who's dealt with injuries the last two seasons and his play is on the decline.

Made no sense to resign Cal. 4th line had a great run. Time for some changes with that line. All the attention on the 4th line when we have issues with the top 6.

I don’t see the risk vs reward on a 2 million dollar savings. Both goalies are capable and not to mention respect and like each other. Varly is also a good mentor to SOrOkin which can only help his development and getting used to being a pro and living in the USA.
