With Rutta I would point to this

Last 3 seasons 5v5

With Hedman - 54% HDCF

Without Hedman - 45% HDCF

And when he’s not with Hedman he had McD and Sergachev so it’s not like he was playing with bums.

And he'd be paired with a top 10 in defense for last season dman if Marino goes hahah.... Such an unnecessary move by Hex to get him...he did so much right starting with Rust... Then this fn blunder hahah

There’s no Hedman to hide him. He’s a 3rd pair guy that might end up in your top 4. Not ideal.

I believe Rutta was paired with Hedman last season, so he had 1st pair matchups. With Pens he wouldn't be 1st pair, so more favourable matchups.

Their numbers are pretty similar last season with Rutta a bit better in most metrics. He was getting more O zone starts than Marino with Marino getting more D zone starts than him.

Rutta averaged just over 16mins of ice time last season per game. He's not a top pairing guy at all. At best he's a #4, more a #5-6.

If we could trade a defenseman and sign either Milano or D. Strome, that’d be great.

Low TOI because he didn't play PP or PK.. He was paired with Hedman at 5 on 5.

Better than the 8th/9th Dman we had forced into our top 4 a few years prior

Interestingly.... I just checked it out and Marino's metrics are worse without Petts and Petts are better without Marino haha

I get not being on the PP with Hedman and Sergachev, but not being on the PK should tell you all you need to know if you think he's a top 4 D man.

I don't think it nor do I think he's very good or its a good signing hahah... However it doesn't dismiss the fact he was a cup winning team's top pair D man in the playoffs two seasons ago and again as well to the finals this past one.

This is the same genre of argument that leads to the we don’t need Kris Letang because we won a Cup with Ron Hainsey on the top pair

Nah, doesn't lead to that... Not from me, anyway haha

I actually hope it's Rudy gone.. Not that he deserves it but I'd rather Rudy and a LD gone than Marino. Rutta on 3rd pair with favourable matchups could be ok, not necessary or great at all, but just ok haha

He averaged less 5v5 ice time than Bogosian the last 3 playoffs so there’s that.

He's just not shown that he can be a top 4 D man and PITT is hoping he can become one despite history...this is usually a bad idea, especially somebody who is already 31yrs old...

Definitely interested to see what trades PIT and DET make. They both made signings like they had things in the works.

Bogosian has been great for them... Another guy with sh!t underlying numbers no one here wanted when available... Same for Gudbranson when the Pens obtained him, everyone lost their minds about how sh!tty he was. He ended up pretty damn good on 3rd pair with Pens.

Rutta may be a terrific 3rd pair guy - but do you want to pay a 3rd pair guy $2.75M per year?

Trading out 14m and RFA rights for 15m+ is pretty crazy.

Your scenario also leaves you with like 1 LD and 19 RD.

- Feds91Stammer

Matheson, PO Joseph, Friedman all play LD. Rutta plays both. Letang, Ruhwedel and Marino RD.

Rutta does not play both. And POJ in the top 4? Bold strategy.
