Signing Rutta isnt a terrible deal. I would used the money differently, but I think its obvious now that Marino and Pettersson are the two goners. Which is interesting because Pettersson is a good friend of Rakells.

-Rutta's Cap Hit: -$2.75
Cap savings = $5.675

That's a big cap savings and youd have to think they are going after a big fish. Could a package around Kapanen, Marino, and a 1st get a guy like JT Miller? Maybe.

But you are taking a big chance with that defense:

Matheson-Rutta
POJ-Chad R

That's a noticeable downgrade from last season.

Hell, if we were going to add another RHD - I'd have rather paid up for Klingberg

Add in getting rid of Zucker's $5.5M hit, and there is even room for Gaudreau! I do think this move, along with the above allow the PENS to go after D Strome and upgrade on D...

2 dmen have to be moving. Maybe Dumo for the cap dump and Marino brings back the top 6 winger.

Rutta isn't somebody you want with Letang. He's not strong enough defensively. He's a good #4-6 D, not a top 3 guy.
