100% agree. There isn't anybody affordable still FA, so it would need to be by trade I think. Not sure who is available on that side of things, but I would imagine there are good enough options.

Dumping all that salary would be nice though. Guys like Strome (either), Palat, etc are still out there, and $9-10M would easily land 2 of them. Use the other money, if needed, on the trade front to upgrade D...

Yeah, I'd like to see a defensive upgrade over what they have now, but seeing as that's not likely to happen because they can't simply trade their defensemen for better ones, then if they can at least maintain the same general level of blueline adequacy, and instead upgrade the forward position by making salary/roster adjustments in the defensive corps, it's all they can really do.
