Per TSN: The Montreal Canadiens have traded defenceman Jeff Petry and forward Ryan Poehling to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for defenceman Mike Matheson and a 2023 fourth-round pick.

Matheson is a good offensive dman with poor defensive skills. High risk player. Was good this season. Not good the year before. Needs the right situation to excel.

I'd call him a rich man's Chris Wideman.

With 4 years at 4.875 left.

I think he was a 3rd paring guy in PIT, seems to have a bit of an offensive touch but nothing crazy... I hope he's solid defensively at least lol

Nit a great return to say the least, but there was next to no market for Petry…
- Karine Hains

What are the terms of his contract (Matheson)?

EDIT: Never mind jugkope answered the question.

so Hughes isn't making a whole lot of cap space with this trade lol... at least he got something in return, rather than having to pay to dump Petry's contract.

not last year, that's for sure lol, he wasn't solid in any aspect of his game, but he usually doesn't make too many dumb mistakes in his own zone, he's responsible enough for a puck-moving dman.

Not ideal ... but we got rid of an unhappy player and a guy who didn't have any future with the organisation for a guy who's less expensive and a throwaway pick.

Meh ... as long as we clean up some cap space I can live with it.

EE was on spittin chiclets last year during the cup final preview. He basically spent an hour talking up the greatness of Jeff Petry.

I was given the impression that he'd suck petry's balls through his pee hole. Even the hosts were uncomfortable.

1.4M for 1 more year. But we also open a contract spot and an NHL spot for RHP, Ylonen, or whoever.

Petry is susceptible to brain farts in the defensive zone, in any event, just checked they both have similar +/- ratio and Matheson is actually a + player the last 2 seasons

Here's what Kent Hughes off-season looks like so far for the #Habs as they continue to create more cap space and flexibility for themselves:

IN
Evgeni Dadonov
Kirby Dach
Michael Matheson

OUT
Shea Weber
Alexander Romanov
Jeff Petry
Ryan Poehling

Result: +$4,982,143 in c/space

Dach needs a contract though.
