I hope POJ gets to play. Also Ty Smith. But someone’s going to be the odd man out. Training camp will sort out some things I hope.

Teddy sends Archie on a breakaway against Arizona, scores a goal. Bingo, bango, bongo Archibald is the 'guy who can play up and down the lineup.'

Ruutta signing is still baffling if Petry was the plan from the beginning. Do they expect him to take a top 4 role next year when dumo leaves?

Bottom6 while disappointing, still an upgrade over 2015:

Yea it's really looking like Archie will be in the lineup at the beginning of the season.

Is it possible Nylander Makes the team and contributes in the top 9?. Was decent at WB last year.

Jan Rutta is something I still don’t understand.

It seems pretty easy to understand given the sentences directly preceding it.

I’d very much like to be proven wrong on this prediction.

This is a load of crap. This coming from the guy who was actually upset that the Penguins won the Caps series because the fancy stats favored the Caps.

I love how bloggers pretend to know exactly what general managers are thinking.

I bet Rutta ends up with great fancy stats and all of you love him.

I do think Rutta will be good for us. Also think Smith is not getting enough credit around here.
Hopefully Dumoulin and Carter can have good seasons. Both were pretty good for us before some parts of this last season.

The issue with Rutta is not how good he winds up being. It’s that he’s not necessary. It’s cap space that could have been spent elsewhere.

Mngmnt wanted size+puck moving Dmen and thay acomplished that by bringing in Petry (both), Rutta (size) and Smith (puck movement). Nothing wrong about that...

I just would never trade Matheson for that to happen. Sucks.

Yes, there is something wrong about poor asset management. Spending in areas you DON'T need prevents you from spending in areas you DO need. Instead of spending on Rutta, they could have added Nino Niederreter who addresses adding size and an upgrade to the forward group.

I think sometime you focus so much on "giving things a chance" you miss the asset management portion. Right now, unless a lot of "what ifs" pan out, the Pens bottom six is a major step down from last year and that WILL be a problem.

And FWIW, while Rutta brings size, he doesn't use his size enough.

I guess from the talk inside the organization is that Rutta was brought in to clear the front of the net especially on the PK. Him and Petry are seen as something we were lacking due to their ability to clear the net. Hex wanted to improve the teams defense in front of the net and also our ability to add factors we were missing one season prior.

I think this is also why Poehling was someone Hex was excited to add, because he is young and he will go to the net. I believe this is a big factor into us resigning Rakell as well.

Exactly this. That's what they wanted to do. I just wouldn't trade Matheson as I thought he was a part of the solution.

All You said above I agree just you're not factoring mngmnt wanted size in the back end. Period. You can play manager all you want but it won't matter.

Trading Matheson was an example of poor asset mngmt as he had good size and was a very good puck moving Dman. Signing Kapanen to this amount $$ was poor asset mngmnt. The Marino deal was OK as they cleared space and brought a good young player in Ty Smith and signed Rutta (bigger body, as they wanted).

With all that said a Nino signing wasn't lost on the Rutta deal. Period.

Edit: Pettersson is a good defensive player but just cant clear the net as he weighs as much as a 5'10" guy. I really thought he was the one to go before Matheson or Marino. Apparently we found no takers.

If they brought in Rutta to clear the net front on the PK fire everyone in hockey ops. We’re talking about a soft defenseman that wasn’t in the primary PK rotation for Tampa.

Petry will handle the loss of Matheson and then some. He's more reliable than Math.

Think about both with us....pretty eh?

Petterson (Matheson)-Petry
