LBR wrote about his analytics on SCH. The numbers make him look far better than many here suggest. We either believe in analytics, or we don't, I guess.
To me, he and his contract are far down the list of Hawks' concerns. Of course, trading him is fine by me. - mohel
What's done is done, but Head Scout Stanley not only gave him a top of the salary range deal for 8 years but blew out a top 10 draft pick and Bovquist too to make sure he got his man. Jarmo probably still hasn't wiped the smile off his face.
In addition, playing him 30 minutes a night won't make things any better no matter what the analytics say. Best solution is to pair him with a plodder who just looks after his own zone. It will keep Jones' minus number down. |

I truly think if you flipped Nurse for SJones, he'd be a monster on that team. Also his durability and strength are really really impressive when he can stay upright. - BetweenTheDots
Strength? He gets beat along the walls constantly. Edmonton would still have the same issues cause he and Nurse are pretty much the same player.
He is an overpaid Tyson Barrie. |

If Jones was a free agent at the start of this offseason, he would have been one of the most coveted D-men (if not players) available, and would have gotten the same contract offer from a number of suitors.
Yes, it is a very difficult contract to get rid of, and yes it is wasted/overkill on the Hawks, but he easily would have gotten the same thing on the open market. - Chunk
Jones' contract MIGHT become an issue five years from now - IF four+ of the kids just drafted become so good that they can't get a bridge deal. |

If he would have received the same contract in free agency and he’s so coveted, why do you also think he would be hard to trade? |

Yeah, it would have been far better if the Hawks had stuck with a rebuilding plan rather than obtaining Jones, McCabe and Flower. But Jones' deal is not inhibiting the Hawks in this rebuild. |

Ya, his salary doesn't matter with this squad but you have to wonder what Stan was thinking or who was advising him.
Jones makes more than Hedman, Heiskanen and Petrangelo and the same as Makar and McAvoy. He aint even in the same area code as those guys and never will be. |

Klinberg who had similar numbers as Jones only got a 1 year deal at 7M. Yes, he's two years older than Jones. Maybe he envisioned a 7 x 8 or 9M contract and misread the market.
The Jones contract was mentioned in an article about being one of the worst contracts in the league. Maybe if Stan was still the GM he would have signed for that much this off season.

Its what he played pretty much the whole time with the Hawks. Whereas Lafferty has played center and RW with the Hawks. - Elbows15
I thought the whole reason that he rarely played with Kane is because they were both on the right side.
With Saad and Toews he was on the right.
Same with Kurashev and Dach. |

As I said, I'd rather they hadn't abandoned the rebuild. |

Klingberg didn't misread the market except the teams that would be interested in signing him do not have the cap space to do it. Why do you think Kadri is still not signed. Because the teams with cap space (e.g. the Hawks) are asking for more to take on a bad salary (e.g. Van Rymsdyck) than the teams want to give. All Klingberg does for the Ducks is get them to the cap floor so they can flip him at the deadline.

I foresee Jones playing 25+ minutes a night for the next few years. Good or bad he'll eat up those minutes allowing some of the newer kids to take on less minutes and learn the trade. Maybe after four years he'll get worn down enough and have to undergo some surgeries ala Seabrook and Weber. Then he could be placed on LTIR for the duration of his contract.

Well then, it must be true.
I'm not defending the contract. All I am saying is that he would have gotten that number on the open market easily. Point producing D-men always get money whether we like it or not. |

Okay. And Jones, if he was a free agent this summer, would have been in a similar situation, I assume, and not received a 7 x 9.5M deal. |

Interesting they have Kubalik listed as a LW. - Chunk
He has Boston as average with Marchand, Hall and Debrusk and Toronto as a tier 2 even though that’s weakest spot among forwards. It reads like a lazy summer time filler article |

Jones' contract would be a bigger issue to me if the Hawks were weaponizing their available cap space. But right now they have $10.5M in cap space and their estimated salary expenditure is $58.6M. Next year $21M+ comes off the books. Maybe they're saving all that space to absorb big salary at the deadline; maybe not. But until they start bumping up against the cap his contract only affects Rocky's wallet. |
