Dude, Jan is worth the read for fans of any team. I bet they read 4 or 5 blogs for every team they post.

Im not so sure about Sid on the top 5 list

Gretsky
Orr
Mario

A lot of debate about those last two spots

Love Troubs so happy about that.

Messier, Jagr, Howe. Theres all those legends of the MTL teams of the past. Crosby should be top 10 I believe.

It is a never ending debate, to be sure. Possibly even without a correct answer. But, if you spell Gretzky wrong again, your posting privileges around here may be in jeopardy.

We've had decades of generational talent. The chances of two top 5 players all time spending their whole careers with a smaller market expansion team are pretty insane. So yes, no doubt we've been lucky.

We can b!tch about Mario's poor health/illnesses and Crosby's concussion history, that can be true while being grateful for the ride we've had.

Wait...did you seriously just call Malkin a top-5 all time player? Maybe top-5 of the last 15 years, but all-time? Come on. Crosby is a top-ten, Malkin is more like top-25.

As for Rags fans mad about Pens fans in here, what would you expect based on the first post in the comments section?

...Lemieux and Crosby...?

Lemieux and Crosby are the generational talents, guys like Jagr and Malkin are top tier players, but not in the same category as the other two.

You would hope that someone with Lindros as his avatar would remember Mario...

Here's a little reminder (in a fashion I, for one, won't find so hard to relive).

Personally, my top 5 would be (in no specific order)

Gretzky
Lemieux
Orr
Howe
Crosby

Messier > Crosby

IMO, if Crosby were to play as many games as Mess or Jagr, he would be remembered as being superior. Like Gretz and Mario, he has done things on the ice that have created more skilled players in subsequent generations. Things that players before him never even considered trying.

I think Messier is remembered mostly for willing two teams to Stanley Cups without Gretzky more than anything else

From a pure offensive talent standpoint, I think you could make a pretty good argument that Jagr is right there with Crosby. Hell, when Malkin was feeling it 10+ years ago, I think you could make a similar argument. But neither can come close to match Crosby as a complete player IMO.

The mark of greatness is identifying a weakness and working on it even when you are an elite player. Crosby recognized he needed work on his backhand and he made it a strength. The same with faceoffs. Unsure I put him top five and hard to compare eras. But if he had stayed healthy, his numbers would be off the chart and he is a leader as well.
