The Canes are over the cap with Necas signing so Patches on LTIR provides some relief. The biggest winner is probably Jake Gardiner who likely would have been bought out to get under the cap. Instead of two thirds of his salary he should receive an extra million plus by not being bought out.
On another note, Justin Williams had the same surgery as Patches and was back on the ice in 2 and a half months.
