I guess the idea is that during a rebuild as a guy being plugged in as the defacto 2nd line centre until Bedard comes in will get enough points by default that a bridge would be dumb.

Habs won't get Bedard, they will have to settle for Fantili but your point remains. but 3.5M isn't bad either for a 3rd line center.
