Being on national tv has nothing to do with Philly being a hockey town. Flyers are a popular team outside of Philly. Still a brand name to some extent.
These same dopes who still push the BSB and other old cliches think they will get people to watch. My guess is I bet they are not on national tv the 13 times you say they are when all is said and done.
Not a hockey town. Accept it son. - furio16
I’ll bet bottom dollar the games their on nationally will be against rivals. Probably big market rivals. Philly/rags national game also panders to rags fans. Same againgst say Boston. I’ll bet there aren’t many philly/ari national games. Philly is big market. They’re always gonna be on national stage.
Problem with flyers is they’re becoming more and more irrelevant in their own city. For example when Sabres sucked to high heavens city and fans still supported team. Examples: Sabres game nights many businesses let employees wear team gear. Bar specials. Pizza specials all that type stuff. What happens in Philly on game nights? Idk I don’t live there. When philly was in finals I saw clips of city decked out in flyers stuff. Idk where I’m even going with this really. Best I can describe it is if you’ve been to a real hockey city you know. It’s a vibe and visible everywhere. Things hockey related often. I never got that vibe in Philly except around arena. |

I watched a couple of Sabres games last year and it could have been mistaken for a game in south Florida. I mean, just rows and rows of empty seats. Not understanding your comment that they supported them when they sucked to the high heavens? Can't argue that the Flyers are becoming more irrelevant in their own city. The reality is that the Flyers have sucked now for a good decade and they've been diabolically bad the past couple of seasons. There are 3 other sports teams in Philly too versus just one other in Buffalo. When the Flyers are horridly bad and the other teams are all competitive you are going to fall behind no matter how dedicated your fan base is. That's just reality.
Another reality is that Philly will always be a football/Eagles town first. I worked in Philly for 15 years and it was all Eagles all the time(to the point that I became sick of hearing about them). When one of the other 3 teams make a playoff run you will see the city decked out in their colors and they will become the focus of the sports fans in general. |

I think you hit the nail on the head. We probably have different definitions of a hockey town. Philly did have the final 4 of the NCAA several years back, but yeah, not much compared to Buffalo. However, Buffalo looked like Florida this past season as far as attendance was concerned. Another difference in those two cities is the fact that Buffalo only has two pro sports teams. Of course, I'm not going to try and compare Philly hockey wise to cities like Toronto or Montreal cause that would be silly.
The other stuff is pretty easy to answer. It's a pretty well known fact around these parts that most Flyers fans live OUTSIDE of the city limits. I live in a town 25 miles west of Philly (West Chester) and we have four hockey rinks in this town alone. Those rinks are always busy and they turn them into roller hockey rinks in the summer. Out here you will see lots of Flyers license plates and Flyers apparel. Only the Eagles have a bigger presence out here as far as merchandise is concerned. The reason that you would hear almost no hockey talk on those dreaded talk radio stations is cause most of the people employed by those stations are city dwellers that never played hockey and know very little about the sport. That's why they always talk about the Eagles and Sixas. They drive the talk for their agendas and hockey people aren't gonna call into those shows cause they know that they are mostly ignorant to the sport. - Phillywhiteout
Yeah I gotcha. I obviously don’t sight see eat Chester. I usually stay closer to city but not right in. I think probably farthest I went any extended period of time is king of Prussia mall and some strip clubs. I did find it annoying as (frank) trying to buy gear and had hard time finding real decent gear outside of arena. For example here if your ever in buffalo every store and I mean every mom and pop 7/11 grocery store doesn’t matter is gonna have bills/Sabres poop. Clothes cups keychains just whole lots of poop. Lol. Also like anywhere you go here you gonna hear bills /Sabres talk. You literally can’t take a piss without dude in urinal next to you talking sports. Maybe because it’s the big thing to do/watch here? As far as arena yes last year and year before attendance was down. I used to have seasons long ago but gave them up. Tried to get back but waiting list like 10k deep. I think it was more a eichel debacle thing where fans just got too fed up. They have had basically full house tho even with poop teams. What suck for me is people know I’m flyers fan so I get poop all the time and I can’t even say anything anymore. But a lot of people here don’t like what’s going on in Philly either. They like the tradition of hating flyers with a passion. They feel sorry for philly fans now. Like bro wtf I can’t even (frank) with you. I want the rivalry back.
Funny story about it… when leino scored on Easter Sunday to force game 7 back a few years ago I get up from table and go out on porch and scream “ and the lord said let their be light”
My neighbor comes outside all pissed (obviously he heard me and knew I was flyers fan) and he says to me “ one more word and I swear to god I’m gonna burn the Sabres swords on your grass in front yard”.
I never laughed so hard.
Now the (frank)ers laughing at me.

Don’t call me crazy but you watch lacrosse? Bandits are big here. Only buffalo team I really like. They almost sell out arena every game here. Big road presence too. I know it’s not one of the big 4 but bandits almost on that level. At least here. I’ll add if you haven’t been to a game and your in buffalo during a game go. It’s so much better live in arena than regular season hockey 90%of the time |

You gotta remember too Buffalo is smaller than philly metro area. I think philly metro has like 3/4 million people. I could be wrong maybe more maybe less? City of buffalo population is like 250k if you add in all the surrounding suburbs the buffalo Niagara metro area is like 1 million. They used to have nba team back in the day but economics had them move.
Also there the Canadian border factor. There’s a ton of minor hockey within 25-50 mile radius even 100 mile radius of Buffalo. That’s another reason hockey is different here. Erie pa like 1 hour from Buffalo. Toronto only 2.5 hours away. Hamilton like hour away. It’s one thing I’ll give them it’s nice having hockey at all levels to see and experience. |

Gd flyers - Stayin alive Ha ha, that's funny as hell! Must suck for you up there now as a Flyers fan especially cause the Sabres are gonna be getting better over the next few years as the Flyers most likely continue to falter.
I remember that Easter Sunday well. Just pulled into the driveway for Easter dinner when I heard the roar of the family when the Flyers scored the tying goal. Of course, most everyone was glued to the TV during dinner that year when Leino put the game away (and essentially the series). It's scary that I had to think long and hard about what year that was, but I think it was 2011 when the Flyers took out the Sabres in 7 only to have the Bruins exact their revenge for the Flyers comeback in 2010 (they swept the Flyers in 2011 and won the Cup).

I think Philly is 4-5 million now, but lots of folks have moved to the burbs(in the town I live in there is like 1 million people in a 10 mile radius from town). The KOP area that you mentioned also has tons of people in that area. Phoenix has overtaken Philly to be the 5th largest city I believe although why people would want to live in that heat I have no idea. You certainly live in a better area for hockey overall and it's not even close although we kind of live in a town that is an oasis for hockey. One of the 3 high school hockey teams in town have won the state championship like 10 years in a row or something like that. I've never been to Buffalo although I don't know why. Been to Canada (Toronto, Montreal and Quebec City) many times, so not sure why we haven't made it there. Have to give it a try sometime. A also gotta add this and I know it’s weird but where the (frank) has the crowd gone in Philly. First game I went to in Philly was in 2001 after 9/11 happened. Well later that year. Anyways. Crowd lively chanting into game. Banter all that. It’s been dead in arena outside playoffs for decades. I’ve been to a quite a few arenas and Philly has definitely lost that mojo. I throw up a little when players talk about some home ice advantage with crowd in Philly. Some of the best I’ve been to obviously Toronto. Buffalo is far better. Nashville is far better Carolina is far better. Islanders are far better. Detroit was far better. Did they price out the crazy’s in Philly? Or are the fans just more civilized there now? I didn’t think Philly prices were that much more than others actually the opposite. I always got decent to good prices on good seats to flyers games. Even the suites and I’ve sat all around that arena. It’s like pulling teeth just to get a simple let’s go flyers chant going.
Even people I know that have gone to Philly for game have told me like wtf is up it was a dead ass crowd |

Yeah my daughter is 16 and rabid bandits fan. We were at airport coming home from my son basic training ceromony and getting luggage and she turns around and goes “these (frank)ers are here”. I turn and it was a bunch of the wings players getting their luggage from next over luggage turnstile. I had to laugh. And of course because you know we’re high class yep “let’s go bandits! Let’s go bandits her and I get the airport chant going. Lmao. Classic. Those poor players got their poop and go moving quickly. They looked at us like we were nuts. Had to be a couple hundred people just getting louder and louder. Wings still around for sure |

Even people I know that have gone to Philly for game have told me like wtf is up it was a dead ass crowd - Stayin alive Yep, we had season tickets from 1985 thru 2005. They priced the real fans out and the crowd became more of a corporate crowd. People looking at cell phones instead of watching a game. Of course, the playoff games still rocked the place. We gave up our tickets in 2005 because we were frustrated with the lockout (or whatever it was) and the increased ticket prices, but another factor was the atmosphere in the building. Corporate heads that weren't into the game as much and such. It really started when they moved into the new building in 1996. The old Spectrum was amazing, but when the new building opened it slowly became more corporate and the real excitement was only relegated to playoff games and even then it paled in comparison to the old Spectrum. That was a true home ice advantage! Our first year of season tickets was 1985 and i think the Flyers lost 3 home games all year. Unfortunately they ran into those fabled Oilers teams in 1985 and 1987. Game 6 of the Finals in 1987 is still the best sporting event I ever attended. Loudest building I have ever been in for sports that night. Flyers come back from 2-0 to take a 3-2 lead and Hextall just wouldn't let in the tying goal despite wave after wave of Oilers (Gretzky, Messier, Kurri, Anderson and Coffey...etc.). |

Oh that poop was classic. We sat down for Easter dinner. Everyone eating fast. Whole house Sabres fans just waiting to blow up at me. (frank)ing leino. Then Sabres sign him and he does poop. I still (frank) with them about that. There’s actually a lot of flyers fans in buffalo area. I see hats jerseys car plates pretty much weekly. I think years ago idk if still true they did poll in buffalo news favorite team out of market in buffalo area and flyers came in first. I remember it shocked me that many flyers fans here I would’ve guess obviously Toronto or maybe Pittsburgh but nope philly. There’s always a lot of flyers fans at Sabres games. Back years ago it was even more. poop during lindros era it was sea of orange. They had to put barriers up to bus for players at the old aud back in the day |

The weather here gets a bad rap. I’m in Kenmore. North buffalo I’m basically right between downtown Buffalo and Niagara Falls and canadien border 15 minutes either way. Honestly the winter isn’t bad where I’m at. Yeah occasionally we get hit but the Southtown get the lake effect real bad. My brother live on south town border. (frank)er outside snow blowing 2 feet of snow and I’m sending him pic of my lawn with no snow. It’s crazy the lake effect. Literally no joke I’ve driven on one street with nothing and turn a corner and complete whiteout with several feet of snow. Yeah if your into weather check out the jet stream that goes through like Cleveland Buffalo area. I’m lucky where I’m at. Honestly tho you know how last few years northeast got hit bad. Nyc philly all that? I’m watching tb like poor bastards I only snow plowed like twice all winter. Usually I only have to shovel. Syracuse I think gets it alot worse than buffalo and that stretch from Syracuse south into pa going toward philly gets it bad. |

Yeah my bro and I were like we gotta get to philly and see spectrum. We went to flyer game (new arena) first time in Philly. Spent week there. Did the cheesesteak tour obviously center city historical stuff obviously. This was 2001. Pre cell phone and all that so maps and poop. Got tickets they vip tickets. Booked hotel package. All that. Stayed at the lathom center city. So we’re like we gotta go to spectrum. We were on south st I think go into record store I think as they sold ticket to area events. Something like that. I think it was last year spectrum was open or 2nd to last year maybe. Anyways I’m like hey what spectrum schedule…. (frank)ing Disney on ice. Lmao yep got tickets just to be in there. 2 grown ass men with (frank)ing camcorder recording you know the steps turnstiles pics on wall. Security tried to take my camcorder. Thought I was casing the joint. I’m like dude I’m from out of town. We tried to rip exit sign from wall as souvenir as lighting guy just shaking his head at us. We were like one of the only people in upper deck. O boy never saw flyers there. Did see phantoms there tho. So got a little taste of hockey there. I bet that place rocked. |

Would love to experience that at least once. Fellow weather geeks have gone up there for Lake Effect snow events and they say it's incredible. I guess it gets old though for those folks that are always getting hammered by the snow bands. Sounds like you are one of the lucky ones that isn't plowing and or shoveling snow constantly in the winter time. We don't get enough snow here for my taste though. I'm like, if it's cold it might as well snow! |

Well you want the full experience you get it for sure sometimes in south towns. Let’s put this way one time in driving into work like a moron during storm. I mean we got something like idk 12 feet in 36 hours. It was nuts. So im driving can’t see literally my wipers. I poop you not. So I had to pull over. Im like I know im close. I get out of car to see where the street crossing is. Im on the (frank)ing left side of the road. Im lucky some other dumb ass wasn’t driving. Could’ve drove head on into me. Full disclosure at the time I was working at a religious place and I had to open it up that morning. Needless to say services were cancelled and I was stuck there all day as storm got worse. Young and dumb. Yeah im sure you’ve seen on news people dying and poop from simply walking to store and poop in that lake effect. It’s like a tornado oh it’s over there it’s fine and a minute later it turns. And it’s on you. It does look cool tho like if your driving on thruway around city of Buffalo you can see it in the sky in distance I don’t know how to explain it. It’s kinda looks like a gray wall like a painting. You can literally see where it is. It’s cool but you’re like oh those poor bastards. Honestly you couldn’t pay me enough to live in the south towns. That’s why you see bills games and the wind is blowing like crazy and poop. And I’m probably only like maybe 15 miles from it or so. It’s weird the wind and jet stream. It’s kinda like when you see reporters on tv in hurricanes and wind and rain blowing 100 miles per hour and poop flying. Now imangine snow instead of rain. When I say you can’t see your hand in front of you that no exaggeration. You might want to see it but if you’re in it go outside and then right back inside lol. And the snow drifts from. Houses buried in snow. Forget a car lol dude you can’t even tell where trees are let alone a car or street you just start shoveling until you find something. Hopefully not a body |

Yeah I took my daughter to philly in 2002 I think. That’s when I saw phantoms I think. So next few years I think they were slowing tearing it down. I think we saw it in stages if I remember right. I remember watching flyers games on espn spectrum. Place sounded crazy. My bro and I went to coliseum when was supposed to be last year. It’s was pretty loud and crazy in there I imangine it was probably close to spectrum. And the old aud in buffalo. Those the only old barns I’ve been too. It was a different noise for sure. And the concerts sounded better I think - Stayin alive

They aren’t even on talk radio. It’s all eagles 6ers Phil’s. - Stayin alive
I think I misunderstood you and that you meant they weren't broadcast on the radio.
Yes, the local sports talk stations are all Eagles all the time. |

The joe was crazy arena too. - Stayin alive Yeah, all the old arenas were better than today's cookie cutter arenas. The acoustics were so much better and there were true home ice advantages in those arenas. That is lost with today's arenas and all their suites, but it's all about the almighty buck.

If you are a fan of hockey, you 100% want to watch the Florida panthers over the Flyers. What kind of question is this? I try to stay away but sometimes your posts are so damn dumb - ClaudeFather
Agreed, I loved being able to watch all the different teams on ESPN+ last season especially the playoffs.
I get that people are upset they can't watch the game on regular TV but being on ESPN+ allows more hockey fans to see the game. Enable for the sport to grow in needs a wider audience. |

I gotta disagree that philly is a great hockey city. Where? I’ve been there many times. They aren’t even on the radio. Flyers are only relevant there when they are good. Hardly a hockey city - Stayin alive
Dude, i am pretty sure every game was on the radio. I would sit on the deck and listen to the first period sometimes. What stations did you try to find them on?
