Hains: Rookie Camp Roster Announced
The Canadiens have released the list of 28 players that will attending their rookie camp and taking part in the rookie tournament. - Karine Hains
This will be a strange season.
Usually by now I am hyped about the season starting and watching some games, but this year I have tried to temper my expectations.
Unlike other years, I will not be looking at wins and losses. I have always maintained that win or lose, as long as the effort was there, then spending time watching the games was worth it.
Last year was a real long season because on most night, the effort was not there, from the players to the coaching to the management.
This year, I want to see a return to that effort on every shift. I want to see the development, from MSL as a coach to the kids coming in. I want the focus to be on youth, not having sit in the stands or play 4 minutes a game, but play in roles they are expected to hold on the team going forward. I would rather live with the errors, learning and slumps, not having them pushed aside for some "veteran" player.
It is going to be a frustrating year. But if they really focus on development and youth, I think it might be worth watching all the games. The real question is, do HuGo and MSL and the coaching staff have the patience to keep those kids in the lineup and give them minutes as the season goes on?
Guess we are about to find out.

not having enough patience would be a total failure regarding the organization's objectives for the upcoming season... player development is gonna be pretty poopty if they can't accept the fact that mistakes will be made, and that these young guys need to play if they want them to actually progress and have them learn from these mistakes.
I'm confident that they'll stick to the plan though.

I would also be cool if they had a rotation of defencemen that was playing 3rd pair in Montreal and then Laval... every few weeks swap out a guy with another.
Get all those kids on D some NHL games this year, but also play big minutes int he AHL.
And then have them all be down there for the AHL playoffs.

I strongly believe that the focus is in the right place and that HuGo and St-Louis are on the same page development wise and will be fine to live with the mistakes made and there will be some for sure, growing pains as they say. |

as long as the rotation makes sense, if a player does particularly well and establishes some interesting chemistry with his linemates then ideally you'd want to keep him in the lineup imho.
and agreed on the AHL playoffs, the Rocket could potentially be a fun group to watch this year.

well that's kind of the point, they don't have to be 100% ready. winning/losing games won't matter, it's all gonna be about helping out these young players with their progression.

if they're not ready, their progression should take place in Laval |

oh well if you mean rushing a player and insisting that he plays with the big club even if he clearly can't keep up at the NHL level, then yeah I agree.

you have to put them in a position where they can succeed. there's nothing to learn when you cannot keep up and make mistakes left and right.
absolutely no hurry, let them play in Laval. the best ones will be in Montreal for years, a short stay in Laval can only help.
and short is relative, it's different for each kids. some will need 3 months, others a full year, some 2 years. no hurry what so ever. |

I agree with this 100%, I think we just had a slightly different interpretation of what being "ready" means. the way I see it, a player could be considered not completely ready but still be able to generally keep up at the NHL level, in which case he could continue working on specific aspects of his game under MSL instead of being sent down to Laval. semantics lol. |

being ready means the kid can follow the game, contribute, learn and improve.
it doesn't mean he will not make mistakes, but he will be confortable with the pace of the game. he won't look out of place. |

yes I get all that, my point was that focusing on development means that certain players will be given a bigger opportunity than they normally would get if the team was trying to win games and make the playoffs. anyway lolll

HuGo stated they did nto want too many rookies on D t his season.
Barron, Guhle, Harris - 2 in Laval, 1 in MTL - rotate them out.. then see who should get more games going forward...
Put them on 10 game trials or something like that.
Get them all some NHL games, get them fully integrated with Laval for the playoffs.

I think all 3 will start in Mtl. at least 2 will for sure.
Habs have 2 spots open for kids. 3 if you consider Wideman as your #7. |

They have stated they want to get another veteran D, so we will see what happens.
I expect a waiver wire pick up, tbh.

oh, well then sure.
I expect Guhle and Barron to become a very good pairing, and pretty soon too. won't take them 2 years to find their marks. |

Harris and Guhle will most likely alternate in and out of the line up.
the main question is who will stick around once they have to cut down the line up to 23 players and stay under the cap. We know they have too many forwards already, some of the young guys will be victims of this and will have to head to Laval until there are injuries, guys get traded or are put on waiver.
Are Monahan, Byron and Drouin ready to start on Oct 14th? Who gets injured during camp? too early to answer those questions, the puzzle will be put together at the last minute based on the current situation at that moment.
