But in the end the player is paid by his production, right? His production is good but it is not "highest paid forward in the league" good not even close! There were 8 players who scored 100 points last year and 12 had more than 41 goals!

The player who is a steal right now is Draisaitl!

Good? "Not even close"?

https://theathletic.com/3...-rankings-connor-mcdavid/

The Athletic puts Nate in a group below Makar, McDavid and Mathews (Tier 1A) with Leon and Hedman (Tier 1B) and above Barkov, Crosby, Kuckerov and Josi (Tier 1C). If you don't have a subscription, here's the blurb on Nate:

The apology card for Nathan MacKinnon is in the mail. He dropped out of Tier 1A — where he lived last year, alongside McDavid and Matthews — despite an 88-point regular season. Given how things worked out for him in June, our guess is that he won’t mind. There’s no gigantic trophy awarded to 1A players … yet. Still, his “drop” says something about the standard we’re working with here. An injury-dotted season from one guy, combined with sustained transcendence from a few others, is enough to create separation. The margin is that slim.

The net result? Our exercise has MacKinnon still as one of the five top forwards in the league, albeit the second-best player on his own team.

“(MacKinnon) is older than (McDavid and Draisaitl),” one source said. “No one, even Colorado fans, disputes Makar is better than MacKinnon. Could they be in the same tier still? Potentially, but I think when you’re looking at the top of the league, they’re on the right side of the aging curves. MacKinnon isn’t old, but he’s older than everyone else. He wasn’t bad this year, it just wasn’t him in the MVP race.”

No, it can't just be stone cold numbers. I think he brings more to the team than just goals and assists. I'd rather have MacKinnon that Huberdeau or Gaudreau, even though they had more points last year.

How about eliminating long term contracts Then you truly will be paid by your contribution Somewhat like golfers If they do not play well they do not make a lot of money Guaranteed long term contract do not work out in most cases and you are stuck with a guy who has a fat wallet with no production OVER AND OVER RINSE AND REPEAT

I'm not sure what your point is. The average hockey player doesn't make very much money. The average salary outside the NHL is below 50,000. The average neurosurgeon's salary is pretty close to the top 1%.

There are tens of thousands of people in the world that can do what a top neurosurgeon does. There are tens of people that can do what MacKinnon does.

Dumbest comment ever on HB... By far.

They can say he's God, it doesn't mean they're right! He's played 638 games and has 648 points!

His first 4 years, on overall poor Avs teams, mean his last 5 years of dominance, and should be counted against during contract negotiations? Your 41 goals/100 points argument had more weight.

Golfers get paid AFTER they've played. You want hockey players to negotiate their pay for a season after it's completed?

I never implied that All I said dimwit is that golfers get paid because of their performance They play bad and they do not make the cut and therefore do NOT get paid. Long term contracts make a lot of players lazy They have their cash and a lot of them once they get the long contract slack off. If you get paid by your performance no more than one year contracts should be giving I would bet my bottom dollar the slackers would be gone
