It’s been that way in Flyer land for a long time.

Right. Well, after years, my interest in this team is fading.

I expect all of them to make the team and be in the opening night lineup. But, as I said above, close to a lock is not the same thing as an actual lock. Frost, Tippett and York are in "it's your job to lose" territory at this stage.

An actual lock is the player could have the worst camp of his life, get noticeably outplayed in camp and yet the spot is his. Example: barring injury, Carter Hart is the opening night starting goalie. He could have an .850 save percentage in the preseason and he's still starting Game 1.

Thanks, Bill. I like the "you have to earn it" philosophy.

FINALLY!!! Hockey is back. Even if just preseason.

Agree with the other posts re: Frost, Tippet and York, and even N Cates, as well. If they're not locks, I'm not sure how to think about this team. Particularly in light of Tort's comments about playing the kids. Maybe this just a way to get a high compete level out of them right away.

- Letterkenney

I understand why Noah Cates wouldn’t be a lock but Frost, York and Tippett have got to play.

interesting. from the small sample size last year, Cates seems like he's more nhl ready than frost.

The only reason N Cates wouldn't be is because he's waiver exempt and with the way the team is constructed contractually, that may just be the reality.

I agree with this!! Frost doesn't get a pass just because he was one of Hexy's first round picks. He has to earn his spot and it's now or never for him. Thanks!

That blows me away…

In a small sample size as you put it, at the end of a season where neither side had anything to play for, this is why some believe Cates should be in the NHL. Cates best game was against a half asleep Pittsburgh Penguins.

what has frost done to nail down this spot of his? and didn't he play better with Cates on his line? wouldn't you agree cates all around game is better than frost?

noah had 9 points in 16 games. was a plus player

frost had 16 points in 55 games. was a minus player

other teams are coasting.....seriously. they were both out there.

Take all of it with a grain of salt. Wait and see if they announce a health status and timetable for the player, if that timetable proves to play out as projected and above all how it actually plays out.
- bmeltzer

After the Ellis fiasco (day to day, week to week, etc) why should anyone, yet alone fans believe anything that this organization says about player health

I’d say every young player looks like a new shiny toy. Didn’t Frost put up points his first couple games in the nhl??

remember everyone was up in arms about art-ross akesson and that one guy we didn't sign and went back into the draft and got picked up by another team who everyone thought was the next coming (was like 8-10ish years ago?)

I like both kids. I think Frost has been more in our view but both are so young and have a great chance ahead of them. I think Frost has a higher upside offensively but it’s probably closer then most think.

I take absolutely nothing out of what the Cates, Frost, Tippett line did at the end of last season. The games were meaningless and I’m willing to bet Torts is focused on now, not last season.

"Thought it was interesting this morning that Lappy stopped short of issuing the same praise to Cam York -- who is not waiver exempt -- that he did to Frost. York is in great shape but Lappy challenged him to get better at making the routine play routinely and not just the high skill plays. Those two butted heads over the same stuff with the Phantoms last year." - So that's Lappy today

"The first time I met with them, I'm like, 'If you're a physical player, be a physical player. If you're a skilled player, show us your skills. Don't try to reinvent yourself right now. Play the way that took you here,'" Laperriere said of his message for the two rookie games. "Sometimes you have kids that are not physical and they try to run around because they know the coach used to be that kind of player. I don't want to see that. I want them to show me and show the organization what brought them here, why they got drafted and why they're in camp." - Lappy 10 days ago

Talk about sending mixed messages, here's a prime example why the guy should not be in the position he is with the Phantoms. "If you're a high skill guy, be a high skill guy" to "Hey just make a routine play, not a high skill play"....There's guys out there that are capable of routinely making high skill plays. Those are what this organization needs. Not an entire AHL roster of hard workers

I think every time you line up in an NHL game you can take something from it. True it’s a new year, but with some of the young guys getting some time up with the big club is extremely valuable. None of those guys has preformed well enough to be given anything. But in all fairness they were such a train wreck last year NO one should feel they are a guarantee to be part of the future here.

well, if what they did at the end of last year means nothing, the question still remains....what have any of them done to nail down a starting job?

from what i saw cates is a more rounded player than frost. but we can disagree, that's fine.
