First! Hope Domi rebounds some with us this year. Interesting write-up! |

Cool report. Thanks to Schwifty and SabresTaco!
It will be interesting to see how he shakes out. Sometimes as players get older they change their style or focus to gain some advantage. Hossa notably improved his defense for example.
Maybe Domi (playing with Kane) will learn to shoot more. |

When then do I think we’ll be underwhelmed with the return.
Kane - late 1st + b-level prospect
Murphy - 3rd round pick
Jones (only Caleb could be dealt) - 4th round pick
Domi - 3rd round pick
Toews - 5th round pick

Hey thanks for reading.
From Scott Powers:
"An issue a lot of Kane’s linemates, especially new ones, seem to have is deferring to him too often. It was something DeBrincat had to work out of his system before he and Kane could start being more offensively threatening.
It appears to be something Domi and Athanasiou have to figure out now. On separate plays Sunday, Domi and Athanasiou passed up on high-danger shots to attempt to get the puck to Kane. On the second one, the trio had a three-on-one entering the offensive zone. Kane brought the puck in on the right side and centered it to Athanasiou within a few feet of the net. Athanasiou tried to go back to Kane quickly, but the pass was deflected and the opportunity vanished."
I think that line has some opportunity to do some fun things this year if they're kept together, but good god the defense is going to be a black hole. Kane can make those guys better, but Domi has never had a shot mentality. I wonder if Kane and Richardson can make him focus on putting pucks on the net this year. |

This research confirms just how strategic this signing was. Domi will not result in any surplus wins, even if he performs well on the score sheet (which I don't think he will).
If you saw the Athletic article about the Lightnings development model you're probably depressed like me. The Blackhawk organization is so far from a well-oiled development apparatus. The article highlights the mental game, which looks to me to be a primary failure of this organization when you see so many promising kids, especially dmen, fade into nothings.

Realistically, I'm not sure you want him to necessarily contribute to more wins. You can feel free to put me in my place, if you think I'm out of line, but I think Bowman had a very poor read on where this team was at, and was trying to retool with nothing in the shed. The trade for Seth Jones was particularly puzzling - giving away two 1sts, a 2nd and a solid defensive prospect. Davidson has come in and made a lot of really good moves, capitalizing upon the good name that a lot of Hawks players have.
Getting 3 1st round picks in last year's draft and 2 2nds was excellent, and the Hawks have 2 1sts in each of the next two drafts, and 2 2nds this year. All of that is before additional assets with huge value like Kane or Toews are moved. If Domi and Athanasiou come in and play to expectations, they should fetch at _least_ 2nds at the deadline.
Davidson looks like he has a plan and it looks smart. If you guys land a Michkov or Bedard this year, I'd think the rebuild gets fast tracked with all of the smart pieces being accumulated.
I watched my team fail to rebuild properly for my entire life (since the 70s) until they finally realized around 2014 or 2015 that there was a process to follow and started to take those steps.
Frankly as an outsider looking in, I appreciate what Davidson is doing.

It is possible that Bowman had orders from ownership to try to field something competitive. We'll probably never know. There were other dubious trades before Seth Jones that fit this pattern of compete now instead of start the rebuild, also. Panarin for Saad, and the trades for de Haan, Tyler Johnson and Fleury. Also, gambling on McCabe as they did. Saying they were trying to draw an inside straight the previous summer would be putting it too kindly.
Once Hossa retired, they should have concluded that they were not going to replace what he brought anytime soon, and gotten serious about the rebuild. |

Regarding Domi, the big thing for me is that he is reunited with Luke Richardson. He had his greatest success as a player in Montreal when Richardson was there, and he came to Chicago because Richardson is the coach here now. |

He kept referring to Brind'amour as "the best coach in the league" when they traded for him and even after they let him walk, so take it with a grain of salt. |

I'd agree with you more if the numbers weren't there for him with Richardson in Montreal. Whether or not he regains his form from Montreal remains to be seen, but I'd have to think the odds are better here than with the average NHL coach.
Edit add: The main objective here is probably to get him to where he fetches a good return at the deadline. Let's not get too carried away on anything beyond that. |

Yeah the talent is definitely there to be a 50+ point guy with enough minutes, it's just that the effort level comes and goes a LOT. |

Thanks, Zach, for posting the article.
A huge thanks to TheSabresTaco for all his hard work and research, all of the credit should go to him.
I'm hoping Domi can get boost in his numbers from playing with Kane and it ups the return for him at the trade deadline. Another draft pick or prospect will help in the rebuild. |
